Gloss paints

AH-acryHc (100%) latex emulsions are commonly recognized as the most durable paints for exterior use. Exterior grades are usuaHy copolymers of methyl methacrylate with butyl acrylate or 2-ethyIhexyl acrylate (see Acrylic ester polymers). Interior grades are based on methyl methacrylate copolymerized with butyl acrylate or ethyl acrylate. AcryHc latex emulsions are not commonly used in interior flat paints because these paints typicaHy do not require the kind of performance characteristics that acryHcs offer. However, for interior semigloss or gloss paints, aH-acryHc polymers and acryHc copolymers are used almost exclusively due to their exceUent gloss potential, adhesion characteristics, as weU as block and print resistance. [Pg.540]

Whereas semigloss paints can use only one extender, dat paints, especially interior, can use combinations of three or more. Gloss paints typically do not use extenders, which decrease gloss. As a result, gloss paints lack the hardening effect of extenders and must rely on harder binders for adequate durabihty. Other types of extenders used in paints can have functional properties such as corrosion resistance, mildew resistance, and film-hardening effects. Thek functional properties result from thek reactive nature in the paint film. Zinc oxide is an example of a functional extender that contributes to these properties in a paint film. [Pg.541]

Gloss Enamels. In contrast to exterior and flat wall paint, about half of the gloss paint or enamels sold are based on alkyd resins. Professional painters particularly favor the continued use of alkyd gloss paints. The need for reduction of VOC emission levels, especially in California, has led to efforts to increase the soflds content of alkyd paints or overcome the disadvantages of latex gloss paints. [Pg.352]

Phenolic resins are useful surface coating materials. Resols are useful for stoving lacquers for coating chemical plant, textile equipment, razor blades, brassware cuid food cans. Phenolic resins are used with poly(vinyl formal) as a flexible, tough and solvent-resistant wire enamel. Oil-soluble resins based on synthetic phenols form the basis of some gloss paints. [Pg.661]

Benzyl alcohol [100-51-6] is miscible with organic solvents apart from aliphatic hydrocarbons. It dissolves cellulose esters and ethers, fats, oils, alkyd resins, natural and synthetic resins, and colorants. Polymers—with the exception of lower poly(vinyl ethers) and poly(vinyl acetates)—are not dissolved. Small amounts of benzyl alcohol improve the flow and gloss paints, delay the evaporation of other solvent components, and have a plasticizing effect in physically drying paints.
