Tank cells applications

The tank cell has found an interesting and elegant application in the sugar industry [44]. A modified Grignard reactor is used for the scale-up of the indirect oxidation of galacturonic acid [45] (Scheme 1). A vessel equipped with a mechanical stirrer and cylin-drically shaped electrodes is used to produce mucic acid. The reaction conditions are given in detail in Ref. 46. [Pg.1268]

Redox flow batteries, under development since the early 1970s, are stUl of interest primarily for utility load leveling applications (77). Such a battery is shown schematically in Figure 5. Unlike other batteries, the active materials are not contained within the battery itself but are stored in separate tanks. The reactants each flow into a half-ceU separated one from the other by a selective membrane. An oxidation and reduction electrochemical reaction occurs in each half-ceU to generate current. Although the first industrial application of anodic protection was as recent as 1954, it is now widely used, particularly in the USA and USSR. This has been made possible by the recent development of equipment capable of the control of precise potentials at high current outputs. It has been applied to protect mild-steel vessels containing sulphuric acid as large as 49 m in diameter and 15 m high, and commercial equipment is available for use with tanks of capacities from 38 000 to 7 600000 litre . Many interesting biocatalytic reactions involve organic components that are poorly water-soluble. When using organic-aqueous biphasic bioreactor, availability of poorly water-soluble reactants to cells and enzymes is improved, and product extraction can be coupled to the bioreaction. A trivial yet important application is following ethanol production via a bioprocess. Sivakesava et al.1 simultaneously measured glucose, ethanol, and the optical cell density of Saccharomyces cerevisiae during ethanol fermentation, using an off-line approach. Samples were brought to an instrument located near the fermentation tanks and the measurements made in short order. While they eventually used MIR due to the interfering scatter of the media, they proved that Raman could be used for this application. [Pg.385]

Reflectance measurements provided an excellent means for building an ammonium ion sensor involving immobilization of a colorimetric acid-base indicator in the flow-cell depicted schematically in Fig. 3.38.C. The cell was furnished with a microporous PTFE membrane supported on the inner surface of the light window. The detection limit achieved was found to depend on the constant of the immobilized acid-base indicator used it was lO M for /7-Xylenol Blue (pAT, = 2.0). The response time was related to the ammonium ion concentration and ranged from 1 to 60 min. The sensor remained stable for over 6 months and was used to determine the analyte in real samples consisting of purified waste water, which was taken from a tank where the water was collected for release into the mimicipal waste water treatment plant. Since no significant interference fi-om acid compounds such as carbon dioxide or acetic acid was encountered, the sensor proved to be applicable to real samples after pH adjustment. The ammonium concentrations provided by the sensor were consistent with those obtained by ion chromatography, a spectrophotometric assay and an ammonia-selective electrode [269]. [Pg.184]

Several different bioreactor configurations have been described for use in cell culture and fermentation applications. These include stirred tanks, airlift, and hoUow-fiber systems. The majority of bioreactor systems in use for cell culture applications are still of the stirred-tank type. These systems have been used for batch, fed-batch, and perfusion operations. It would not be possible to adequately cover the field of stirred-tank scale-up in the space available here. Instead, this section will touch briefly on the important issues in bioreactor scale-up. Rigid foams are based primarily on polyfunctional, low molecular weight alcohols and amines. Most global applications conventionally use polymeric isocyanates, TDI, or an undistilled grade of mixed TDI isomers. TDI prepolymers which have hydroxyl and isocyanate groups have been marketed as a low vapor pressure alternative to undistilled TDI. Density reduction is effected via the addition of chlorofluorocarbons, low molecular weight alkanes, or via the in situ generation of carbon dioxide. Clean water was flushed through the tank for several weeks in order to reduce contaminant concentrations. Water was then pumped from the tank to lower the water table to the 1 -m depth in preparation for excavation of the 14-40 SMZ. The 14-40 SMZ was manually excavated from the barrier cells starting with Cell 1 (farthest away from the tank wall). Two methods of emptying the cells were used. The first method involved using a small trash pump capable of pumping slurries. This method was somewhat effective and could be used successfully in laiger-scale applications where full-size pumps could be employed.
