System fiber

Extmsion technology is used to produce spunbond, meltblown, and porous-film nonwovens. Fabrics produced by these systems are referred to individually as spunbonded, meltblown, and textured- or apertured-film nonwovens, or genericaHy as polymer-laid nonwovens. These fabrics are produced with machinery associated with such polymer extmsion methods as melt-spinning, film casting, and extmsion coating. In polymer-laid systems, fiber stmctures are simultaneously formed and manipulated. 

Applications exploiting porous silica to encapsulate sensor molecules, enzymes and many other compounds are developing rapidly. Nowadays, sol-gel technology is being used in various fields of modem technology, as for example the basis for optodes, integrated systems, fiber optics, lasers, and new materials.

Of more direct practical importance to textile processing is the fact that it becomes increasingly more difficult to remove the last traces of air from the fiber system. Fiber bundles in yarn can produce quite complex capillary systems that provide ample opportunity for air entrapment in very inaccessible nooks and crannies. A major emerging application of optical fibers is in the distritoion of radio signals for broadband services and wireless communication systems fiber can provide a low loss backbone with large bandwidth. Snch systems require optical sources with narrow linewidth, low noise, and moderate output power. Externally modulated single mode fiber lasers are therefore well suited to applications in these systems. Dual wavelength fiber lasers (e.g., dual polarization mode DFB lasers) are also potentially useful for the generation of millimeter wave radio carriers.
