The bench-scale experimentation and pilot-scale testing required to develop new flue gas treatment technology entail large expenditures. The funding sources available to meet this need are the state and federal governments, the combined utility industry through the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and the major boiler and flue gas treatment system manufacturers. Each must play a productive role in the conduct of this research. 

The role of Federal and other public funding streams for brownfields redevelopment cannot be underestimated. In an evaluation of 107 brownfield projects nationwide, the International Economic Development Council determined that on average, 68% of the funding for brownfield remediation was derived solely from public sources, 22% came from private sector funds, and 10% were remediated using both public and private sector funds. Potentially responsible parties (PRPs) provided limited support for remediation in comparison to public sources (XL International and International Economic Development Council, 2002). It is clear that Federal and state funds have dramatically improved the abilities of communities to get sites evaluated, which has contributed gready to site remediation and redevelopment.

The wide range of funding sources for support of academic chemical research (including industry, multiple federal agencies, state initiatives, universities, and private foundations) facilitates innovative research. 

A functional national system is a prerequisite for organizing effective response to accidental marine pollution, and it also forms the basis for efficient regional cooperation. Some of the needs of the coastal states surpass the assistance that can be provided for by the core budget of REMPEC. To satisfy these needs, the Centre has prepared projects based on specific requests of the countries, which are then submitted to external funding sources, in particular those available from the European Union. The projects mainly focus on capacity building at the port, national, and subregional levels. 

MEP is a collection of 59 centers in all 50 states with about 1,600 (nonfederal) employees. It is managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and funded one-third by NIST and two-thirds by state funds, regional partners, and other sources of revenue.

The federal and state governments have presented a number of opportunities to integrate school-based mental health systems into a communitywide system of care, even if these programs and funding sources were not developed specifically for that purpose. MHD efforts in many countries, including the United States, have declined substantially, in Russia because of lack of funds and in general because the high costs envisioned in setting up a full-scale power station. If funds become available to set up full-scale power stations and with the advent of high temperature nuclear heat sources, the many advantages provided by MHD may be realised. 

Expanded research in the new biotechnologies is moving ahead with support from many sources. Private Industry has shown a very significant interest through a number of new specialized companies as well as older established firms. Many States are putting up funds to establish biotechnology centers.
