Finally, it is, in principal, possible to increase the sample size based on the observed treatment difference at an interim stage without affecting the type I error, but great care needs to be taken with regard to dealing with this statistically. Evidence to date suggests that such procedures offer no real advantages over and above a standard interim analysis plan. [Pg.225]

Construction Codes Rules for Construction of Pressure Vessels, Division 1, which is part of Section T11 of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), sei ves as a construction code by providing minimum standards. New editions of the code are usually issued every 3 years. Interim revisions are made semiannually in the form of addenda. Compliance with ASME Code requirements is mandatoiy in much of the United States and Canada. Originally these rules were not prepared for heat exchangers. However, the welded joint between tube sheet and shell of the fixed-tube-sheet heat exchanger is now included. A nonmandatoi y... [Pg.1065]

Temporary variance An OSH A variance issued to an employer who is unable to comply with a standard by its effective date for reasons beyond their control. The employer must demonstrate a plan for coming into compliance within a period not to exceed one year and provide all available measures to protect the employees in the interim. [Pg.1481]

What Is the Expected Output or Work Product. The specific form of the finished product will vaiy according to your company s practices and needs. However, it s reasonable to expect that the team s efforts will ultimately produce a set of documented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the management system, or their equivalent within your organization (see Section 6.3). Interim work products may include progress reports (see Chapter 8), documentation of discussions and analyses, flowcharts, or other materials. [Pg.144]

The Clean Air Act of 1970 set new standards that went beyond the capabilities of the then existing technology, and spurred a very intensive research effort. The Clean Air Act also called for a study by the National Academy of Sciences of the technological feasibility of meeting the emission standards. On April 11, 1973 William D. Ruckelshaus, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, announced a delay in enforcing the 1975 standard by one year, to be replaced by an interim standard for California and a more relaxed interim standard for the rest of the forty-nine states. [Pg.62]

Interim results from the SPRINT-1 phase 2 trial of boceprevir (SCH 503034) have been released. In subjects who received boceprevir plus interferon-a and ribavirin, viral RNA loads were suppressed at week 12 in between 70 and 79% of subjects infected with genotype 1 HCV, compared with only 34% in the interferon-o/ ribavirin standard of care arm (www.sch-plough.com/schering plough/news/release. jsp releaseID = 1064540). However, it is not yet known if this enhanced early response will translate into sustained response. [Pg.97]

In July 2001, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit vacated the challenged portions of the rule. When it made its decision, the Court invited any of the parties to request either that the current standards remain intact or that U.S. EPA be allowed time to publish interim standards. Acting on this initiative, U.S. EPA and the other parties jointly asked the Court for additional time to develop interim standards, and the Court granted this request. On February 13, 2002, U.S. EPA published these interim standards that temporarily replace the vacated... [Pg.458]

Incinerators in existence on May 19, 1980, were allowed to continue burning hazardous waste if the units complied with the Part 265, Subpart O,4 interim status standards. On November 8,1989,... [Pg.960]

The requirements for interim status incinerators are very similar to the already discussed regulations for permitted units. The interim status regulations, however, are designed to be self-implementing as the facilities are already in operation on the effective date of the standards. Table 23.2 compares the requirements for permitted and interim status incinerators. [Pg.965]

Until U.S. EPA calls in the facility s Part B permit application, where precise permit conditions will be established through a trial burn, owners/operators of interim status BIFs must ensure compliance with emission standards by showing certification of precompliance and certification of compliance. As the deadlines for these certifications have already passed, all interim status BIFs, except for possible extenuating circumstances, should be in the compliance stage. [Pg.975]

As mentioned above, interim status BIFs must be operated much in the same way as those facilities with permits. As with permitted BIFs, owners/operators of interim status BIFs must comply with all applicable TSDF regulations in Part 265. In addition, because interim status facilities have not yet conducted trial burns to ensure compliance with the standards, U.S. EPA has placed some restrictions on their use and what types of hazardous waste these facilities may burn. These restrictions are discussed below. [Pg.976]

Interim status furnaces are required to comply with all of the performance standards with the exception of the DRE. In addition, U.S. EPA established special interim status requirements for industrial furnaces to ensure adequate combustion of hazardous waste until more stringent, permitted conditions could be established through completion of the facility s trial bum. These conditions include minimum temperatures, assurance of adequate oxygen, and continuous hydrocarbon monitoring. [Pg.976]

Interim status combustion facilities subject to the MACT standards also have to meet the three-year deadline. Interim status facilities are allowed to implement certain facility changes if the changes do not amount to reconstruction. To ensure that the reconstruction clause does not present an obstacle for interim status facilities trying to implement changes to meet the new MACT emissions levels, U.S. EPA exempted changes necessary to comply with the MACT standards from the reconstruction limit. [Pg.978]

U.S. EPA promulgated MACT standards for most HWCs on September 30, 1999. These emission standards created a technology-based national cap for HAP emission from the combustion of hazardous waste in these devices. A number of parties, representing both industrial and environmental communities, requested judicial review of this rule, and challenged its emission standards and several implementation provisions. On July 24,2001, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit vacated the emission standards however, it allowed EPA to promulgate interim standards that were in place since February 13, 2002. U.S. EPA issued the new Final Rule and standards on April 20, 2004. Today s standards30 31 shown in Tables 23.5 and 23.6 result from the above judiciary and regulatory actions. [Pg.979]

Numerous radon and radon decay measurements in houses are now being made by a large number of private and governmental organizations. In order to assure valid and consistent measurements, it is important that proven methods be used following standardized procedures. To address this need, EPA issued "Interim Indoor Radon and Radon Decay Product Measurement Protocols" and established a Radon/Radon Progeny Measurement Proficiency program. [Pg.73]

The need to standardize olfactometric measurements is growing in the Netherlands. In 1984 interim limit values on odour concentrations were published in the Indicative Multiyear Programme to combat Air Pollution 1985-1989. This is a revised version of the 1983 proposal (3, 5). In 1988 or 1989 these interim limit values will be laid down in a General Administrative Order. By that time a standardised olfactometer must be available. In the meantime air quality standards will be set for about 30 so called priority substances. For some of these, well defined threshold values are necessary. On behalf of... [Pg.83]
