Waste accumulated speculatively. In order to encourage recycling of wastes as well as to ensure that materials are recycled and not simply stored to avoid regulation, U.S. EPA established a provision to encourage facilities to recycle sufficient amounts in a timely manner. This provision designates as solid wastes those materials that are accumulated speculatively. 

It removes large portions of oily waste accumulations. 

With waste accumulating at the rate of about 1.6 kilograms per capita per day, a need exists to reduce this bulk. However, suitable quantities of municipal solid waste for fuel conversion are available only in large urban centres. 

This volume provides incentives for further development of sustainable fuel cycles through novel and interdisciplinary approaches to an Earth science-related topic. The issue of power generation and associated waste accumulation is of enormous political and social importance for people around the globe, and this book demonstrates that geological research is essential in providing solutions to some of the most pressing problems of today s society. 

Starting with the defined amount of solvent delivered, about 29% of the solvent is carried over into water, arriving at a total of about 104% hazardous waste accumulated. So far - notwithstanding the carry over of solvent - more waste was produced than solvents were introduced because also powder lacquer was found in the waste. This does not include the mass of filter cake of the internal waste water recycling. 

A common example of neurobehavioral teratogenic effects caused by polluted food is the Minamata disease. In a number of areas in Japan methylmercury from industrial waste accumulated in fish which was one of the main sources of the food of the local population. Another case of poisoning with methylmercury occurred in Iraq, where people consumed grain seed treated with a methylmercury fungicide. Women with only minimal poisoning symptoms gave birth to children that showed many neurological and behavioral abnormalities, such as mental retardation, coordination deficits and seizures (refs. 12, 13). 

The first step in the disposal sequence usually involves accumulation or temporary storage of waste in or near the laboratory. Except when a single chemical is accumulated for recovery, waste accumulation generally involves several chemicals in... 

Large quantities of flammable wastes should never be accumulated in a closed, unventilated room. A vapor explosion in such a room would be disastrous. An appropriate container for each category of waste in the waste accumulation plan should always be available. The container must be clearly marked to indicate the type of waste it can contain and the hazards associated with this category. It should be dated to indicate when accumulation began. 

Whether the toluene distillation and product polycondensation is finished, is determined by viscosity or gelatinisation time, and by solid residue. The jacket of apparatus 15 is filled with water to cool the varnish to 40 °C the cooled varnish self-flows into settling boxes 20. After settling, the varnish is sent to ultracentrifuge 21, and the waste accumulated in the bottom part of the settling boxes is periodically loaded off into containers and used to paint factory equipment. 

Triana, with a population of 600, is located at the confluence of Indian Creek and the Tennessee River. From 1947 until 1971 DDT was manufactured in a plant 10 kilometers from Triana. Several thousand tons of DDT industrial waste accumulated in the sediments of a tributary of Indian Creek. Locally caught fish have had total DDT residual levels up to 100 times the tolerance of 5 parts per million (ppm) set by the Food and Drug Administration. The high levels of DDT residues in the 12 persons surveyed were suspected of resulting from their consuming fish which had accumulated DDT from sediments. The task at hand was to measure residents exposure to DDT and relate it, if possible, to health effects in the population—an example of a cross-sectional study. 

Many of these wastes are effectively disposed of during operations. However, current permit requirements and other process limitations have resulted in significant quantities of these wastes accumulating on-site. Hydrolysate from the neutralization of the VX stockpile at Newport, a unique liquid waste stream among the wastes generated at the active chemical agent disposal facility sites, has also accumulated on-site. Specific quantities, issues, and comparisons associated with each of the main waste streams generated at the active disposal facilities are detailed in the remainder of this chapter. 

Containers for hazardous wastes. On-site storage practices are a function of the types and amounts of hazardous wastes generated and the time period over which waste generation occurs. These wastes accumulate in significant quantities, and due to their high chemical power are a considerable hazard to the natural environment.

An acidic system introduces unusually high levels of waste into the kidneys for filtration. If the kidneys cannot keep up, the waste accumulates and can form kidney stones (which are composed primarily of salts made up of uric acid and phosphoric acid) or get into the bloodstream and lead to inflammation elsewhere in the body. Damaged kidneys cannot maintain normal acidity levels and chemical balance in the body. This vicious cycle leads to disease and, if left unchecked, can result in kidney failure.

In view of the small amounts of thorium used at present, waste accumulation is rarely critical. However, monazite sand mining for other purposes may lead to naturally elevated radiation levels from thorium and require special sanitation efforts. 

Each final product should inhibit the first unique step toward its synthesis, that is, the first step following the branch point of the pathway. Thus, Y should inhibit the conversion of C to D, and Z should inhibit the conversion of C to F. (To avoid wasteful accumulation of C or B if neither Y nor Z is needed, high levels of C should also inhibit the conversion of A to B at the beginning of the pathway.)...
