Response fluctuations occur with disease progression as the patient s dopamine reserves are depleted in the brain and as a complication of PD treatment. Motor fluctuations include delayed peak response, early wearing off, random unpredictable on-off, and freezing. Dyskinesias include chorea, dystonia, and diphasic dyskinesia. Wearing off can be visualized by imagining the therapeutic window of dopamine narrowing over time. The therapeutic window is defined as the minimum effective concentration of dopamine required to control PD symptoms (on without dyskinesia) and the maximum concentration before experiencing side effects from too much dopamine (on with dyskinesia). In this study, the protein-induced calciuric effect was rather modest. Such could be the response early in life or it may be due to the natural protein sources, which are reported (13, 14) to be less calciuric than purified protein sources. Proteins differ in their calciuric effect and combining them can render them less calciuric. The relative (to calcium) excess of dietary phosphorus, a hypocal-ciuric agent (14) may have also mitigated pronounced hypercalciuria due to excessive protein.

In some cases relevant to food, our sense of taste may serve as the detector. Conversely, the patient may not be conscious of detection except by exhibiting the response. Early in our evolutionary history, this reflex probably served a very useful function since food which previously caused problems could be eliminated before absorption occurred. Since taste and smell are our body s most sensitive detectors, this reflex prevented unwanted intake of poisons. Our olfactory systems can detect chemicals at concentrations far below those necessary to induce a biological response. Subject Responses. Early in the study subject 4 dropped out and was not replaced. A second, though less obvious, deduction is that because OVAT experiments are essentially sequential they may require an extended period of time to reach a conclusion. New experimental conditions require the results of prior experiments to be known. One may be fortunate enough to find a set of reaction conditions that provide the desired response early in the process. Alternatively, dozens of experiments may be run over a long period of time without achieving the desired response, and without a good indication of whether or not it can ever be obtained.
