Applications. The most ubiquitous use of infrared spectrometry is chemical identification. It has long been an important tool for studying newly synthesi2ed compounds in the research lab, but industrial identification uses cover an even wider range. In many industries ir spectrometry is used to assay feedstocks (qv). In the flavors (see Flavors and spices), fragrances (see Perfumes), and cosmetics (qv) industries, it can be used not only for gross identification of feedstocks, but for determining specific sources. The spectra of essential oils (see Oils, essential), essences, and other natural products vary with the season and source. Adulteration and dilution can also be identified. [Pg.201]

To develop an emission inventory for an area, one must (1) list the types of sources for the area, such as cupolas, automobiles, and home fireplaces (2) determine the type of air pollutant emission from each of the listed sources, such as particulates and SO2 (3) examine the literature (9) to find valid emission factors for each of the pollutants of concern (e.g., "particulate emissions for open burning of tree limbs and brush are 10 kg per ton of residue consumed") (4) through an actual count, or by means of some estimating technique, determine the number and size of specific sources in the area (the number of steelmaking furnaces can be counted, but the number of home fireplaces will probably have to be estimated) and (5) multiply the appropriate numbers from (3) and (4) to obtain the total emissions and then sum the similar emissions to obtain the total for the area. [Pg.93]

The information obtained during the background search and from the source inspection will enable selection of the test procedure to be used. The choice will be based on the answers to several questions (1) What are the legal requirements For specific sources there may be only one acceptable method. (2) What range of accuracy is desirable Should the sample be collected by a procedure that is 5% accurate, or should a statistical technique be used on data from eight tests at 10% accuracy Costs of different test methods will certainly be a consideration here. (3) Which sampling and analytical methods are available that will give the required accuracy for the estimated concentration An Orsat gas analyzer with a sensitivity limit of 0.02% would not be chosen to sample carbon monoxide... [Pg.537]

Direct emission measurements involve the direct measurement of emission rates from specific sources. Direct emission measurements provide tlie data for emission factor and engineering calculations. This is tlie only method tliat provides emission rates for a given source for a given set of conditions. [Pg.312]

The Tax Code contains various provisions that may affect the demand for energy from specific sources. In the transportation area, purchasers of electric vehicles may claim a credit against their income tax liability for a portion of the purchase price. Taxpayers who pur-... [Pg.1121]

Polymer and elastomer data are typically producer-specific. Sources therefore tend to be scattered and incomplete. While no single hard-copy source is all encompassing, the following are worth consulting. [Pg.599]

The Amphiphilic Solute Facilitator family of transporters are simple in the sense that no specific source of energy is used for operation (such as hydrolysis of ATP or gradients of inorganic solutes). [Pg.223]

The K list. The K list designates as hazardous particular wastestreams from certain specific industries. K-list wastes are known as wastes from specific sources. [Pg.501]

The K list of hazardous wastes designates particular wastes from specific sectors of industry and manufacturing as hazardous. The K list wastes are therefore known as wastes from specific sources. Like F list wastes, K list wastes are manufacturing process wastes. They contain chemicals that have been used for their intended purpose. To determine whether a waste qualifies as K-listed, two primary questions must be answered. First, is the facility that created the waste within one of the industrial or manufacturing categories on the K list Second, does the waste match one of the specific K list waste descriptions There are 13 industries that can generate K-list wastes1 2 3 ... [Pg.505]

Emission rates, modes, locations, and times must be described for each species studied. The emission work was done by Hydroscience, Incorporated (HI), of Knoxville, Tennessee. Emission characterization involved review of trade literature, files of the various states, EPA reports and data, and site visits and correspondence with staff of specific sources. [Pg.75]

The application was a model test only and no attempt was made to acquire or validate site-specific source data. Specific and prototype point sources and area sources were included most risk came from the nonspecific, hypothetical sources. Risk was computed using unvalldated, hypothetical unit risk factors. Sample graphical results are presented in Figures 3, 4, and 5. [Pg.81]

The first trichloroethylene isopleths represent impact patterns from a single specific source (a chemical plant). Figure 4 shows trichloroethylene isopleths resulting from all sources, and Figure 5 presents isopleths of net hazard from all chemical sources in the region. [Pg.81]

In 2005, a comprehensive comparison of LCIA toxicity characterization models was initiated by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) in their life cycle initiative. The main objectives of this effort were to [9] (1) identify specific sources of differences between the models results and structure (2) detect the indispensable model components and (3) build a scientific consensus model from them, representing recommended practice. [Pg.100]

All this highlights that it would be quite difficult to distinguish between different oils and fats on the basis of their FA composition after degradation. In particular, if we consider the similarities in the composition of many materials used in ancient times, and how they might have been mixed together, it is clear that the complex molecular patterns exhibited by degraded lipids mean that the specific source cannot be identified, except on favourable occasions. [Pg.197]
