Plant proteins from single sources, such as soybean meal, may be abundant in specific amino acids that are deficient in some cereal grains. Thus a combination of soybean meal and com with theh amino acid symbiosis may provide an exceUent amino acid profile for dogs. LPC Product Quality. Table 10 gives approximate analyses of several LPC products. Amino acid analyses of LPC products have been pubhshed including those from alfalfa, wheat leaf, barley, and lupin (101) soybean, sugar beet, and tobacco (102) Pro-Xan LPC products (100,103) and for a variety of other crop plants (104,105). The composition of LPCs varies widely depending on the raw materials and processes used. The sulfur amino acid content of soy protein can be enhanced by preparing plasteins from soy protein hydrolysate and sources of methionine or cystine, such as ovalbumin hydrolysate (plastein AB), wool keratin hydrolysate (plastein AC), or L-methionine ethyl ester [3082-77-7] (alkaU saponified plastein) (153). The nutritional value of a proteia can be improved by the addition of amino acids of low abundance ia that proteia. Thus the fortification of plant proteias such as wheat, com, and soybean with L-lysiae, DL-methionine, or other essential amino acids (L-tryptophan and L-threonine) is expected to alleviate some food problems (11). In the United States the methionine hydroxy analogue is partially used ia place of methionine. The consumption of L-lysiae has iacreased ia recent years. The world consumption tripled from 35,000 t ia 1982 to 100,000 t ia 1987 (214). Current world consumption of L-tryptophan and i.-threonine are several tens to hundreds of tons. Free substitution of protein meals ia feeds is much more restricted than interchange of oils ia foods. Because of a good balance of essential amino acids, soybean meal is an indispensable ingredient for efficient feeding of nonmminants, eg, poultry and swine. Soybeans provide ca 60% of the world s protein meals, including fish meal (Table 14). Of the 30.0 x 10 t of soybean meal produced in the United States in 1994—1995, 24.2 x 10 t was used domestically, primarily in feeds, and 5.7 x 10 t was exported (50). In the United States, poultry consume the largest share of soybean meal, followed by swine. Lesser amounts are fed to beef and dairy catde. Soybean meal is a principal ingredient in many pet foods (see Feeds and feed additives). [Pg.300]

Pea.nuts, The proteins of peanuts are low in lysine, threonine, cystine plus methionine, and tryptophan when compared to the amino acid requirements for children but meet the requirements for adults (see Table 3). Peanut flour can be used to increase the nutritive value of cereals such as cornmeal but further improvement is noted by the addition of lysine (71). The trypsin inhibitor content of raw peanuts is about one-fifth that of raw soybeans, but this concentration is sufficient to cause hypertrophy (enlargement) of the pancreas in rats. The inhibitors of peanuts are largely inactivated by moist heat treatment (48). As for cottonseed, peanuts are prone to contamination by aflatoxin. FDA regulations limit aflatoxin levels of peanuts and meals to 100 ppb for breeding beef catde, breeding swine, or poultry 200 ppb for finishing swine 300 ppb for finishing beef catde 20 ppb for immature animals and dairy animals and 20 ppb for humans. [Pg.301]

Soybean Protein Isolates. Soybean protein isolates, having a protein content of >90 wt%, are the only vegetable proteins that are widely used in imitation dairy products (1). Most isolates are derived from isoelectric precipitation, so that the soybean protein isolates have properties that are similar to those of casein. They are insoluble at thek isoelectric point, have a relatively high proportion of hydrophobic amino acid residues, and are calcium-sensitive. They differ from casein in that they are heat-denaturable and thus heat-labile. The proteins have relatively good nutritional properties and have been increasingly used as a principal source of protein. A main deterrent to use has been the beany flavor associated with the product. Use is expected to increase in part because of lower cost as compared to caseinates. There has been much research to develop improved soybean protein isolates. [Pg.442]

Nitrogen sources include proteins, such as casein, zein, lactalbumin protein hydrolyzates such proteoses, peptones, peptides, and commercially available materials, such as N-Z Amine which is understood to be a casein hydrolyzate also corn steep liquor, soybean meal, gluten, cottonseed meal, fish meal, meat extracts, stick liquor, liver cake, yeast extracts and distillers solubles amino acids, urea, ammonium and nitrate salts. Microbial insecticides are very complex materials in their final formulation, because they are produced by fermentation of a variety of natural products. For growth, the bacteria must be provided with a source of carbon, nitrogen, and mineral salts. Sufficient nutrient is provided to take the strain of choice through its life cycle to complete sporulation with concomitant parasporal body formation. Certain crystalliferous bacilli require sources of preformed vitamins and/or amino acids for growth. Media for growing these bacilli may vary from completely soluble, defined formulations, usable for bench scale work, to rich media containing insoluble constituents for production situations (10,27). Complex natural materials such as cottonseed, soybean, and fish meal are commonly used. The elevated urinary acidity in the chicken period may have resulted from, among other factors, the distinct sulfur amino acid ratios. The ratio of Met/Cys (mg/g N) in chicken is 150/80 whereas in soybeans it is 80/100, or in more comparable terms 150/100 suggesting that in relation to methionine, soybeans have twice as much cysteine as chicken. Sherman and Gettler (23) noted the importance of both phosphorus and sulfur. That sulfur containing compounds in the diet have an important effect on urinary acidity was confirmed by Lemann et al.
