The use of cyclodextrins as the mobile phase components which impart stereoselectivity to reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) systems are surveyed. The exemplary separations of structural and geometrical isomers are presented as well as the resolution of some enantiomeric compounds. A simplified scheme of the separation process occurring in RP-HPLC system modified by cyclodextrin is discussed and equations which relate the capacity factors of solutes to cyclodextrin concentration are given. The results are considered in the light of two phenomena influencing separation processes adsorption of inclusion complexes on stationary phase and complexation of solutes in the bulk mobile phase solution. [Pg.218]

For foam separation processes, adsorption takes place in solution, the essential basis exists for solute separation by foaming. Foam consists of gas bubbles separated by thin liquid films. The liquid films are often formed by the mutual approach of two already existing liquid surfaces (e.g., two bubbles below the surface). Foam structures may vary between two extreme situations. The first is wet foam, which consists of nearly spherical bubbles separated by rather thick liquid films. Nearly every chemical manufacturiag operation requites the use of separation processes to recover and purify the desired product. In most circumstances, the efficiency of the separation process has a significant impact on both the quality and the cost of the product (1). Liquid-phase adsorption has long been used for the removal of contaminants present at low concentrations in process streams. In contrast to trace impurity removal, the use of adsorption for bulk separation in the liquid phase on a commercial scale is a relatively recent development. The first commercial operation occurred in 1964 with the advent of the UOP Molex process for recovery of high purity / -paraffins (6—8). In the physical separation process, a molecular sieve adsorbent is used as in the Union Carbide Olefins Siv process (88—90). Linear butenes are selectively adsorbed, and the isobutylene effluent is distilled to obtain a polymer-grade product.
