Sizing mechanisms

Physical characteristics of metals have a significant impact on machinabihty. These include microstmctural features such as grain size, mechanical properties such as tensile properties, and physical properties such as thermal conductivity. [Pg.238]

Mechanical attrition is used to remove most of the spent binder. First, dry attrition or abrasion processes crush lumps to grain size. Mechanical abrasion is then used to separate the binder from the sand grains. Sometimes, sand is pneumatically propelled against a metal target plate. The impact of the sand on the plate scrubs off the clay and resin coating from the sand grains. Fines are separated and removed by dry classification. [Pg.175]

For application in flow reactors the nanocarbons need to be immobilized to ensure ideal flow conditions and to prevent material discharge. Similar to activated carbon, the material can be pelletized or extruded into millimeter-sized mechanically stable and abrasion-resistant particles. Such a material based on CNTs or CNFs is already commercially available [17]. Adversely, besides a substantial loss of macroporosity, the use of an (organic) binder is often required. This material inevitably leaves an amorphous carbon overlayer on the outer nanocarbon surface after calcination, which can block the intended nanocarbon surface properties from being fully exploited. Here, the more elegant strategy is the growth of nanocarbon structures on a mechanically stable porous support such as carbon felt [15] or directly within the channels of a microreactor [14,18] (Fig. 15.3(a),(b)), which could find application in the continuous production of fine chemicals. Pre-shaped bodies and surfaces can be... [Pg.396]

An electrostatic treater would process this crude at about 75 bpd, per square fool ol electrode coalescing area. Required treating temperature would l>e about 120 F. Notice that a given size electrostatic treater will process about twice as much crude oil as the same size mechanical treater. Also, it will accomplish this at a 30 F lower temperature. Significance of this will be dealt with later, (. cist of electricity to treat this 1.000 barrels of oil would be about 75 cents based on 4.5 cents pet kWh. [Pg.142]

The characteristics of the solid particles of catalyst (size, mechanical resistance, etc.) have to be adapted to the reactor. In many organic reactions catalysed by acid zeolites, the catalytic act is concentrated in the outer rim of the crystals and decreasing the zeolite particle size generates a significant gain in activity. However, the use of small particles in batch reactors causes serious drawbacks in the separation of the zeolite from the reaction mixture for the recovery of reaction products and the eventual reuse of the catalyst. Also, small particles cannot be used in fixed bed reactors because of excessive pressure drops. [Pg.44]

In large-size mechanically-agitated multistage contactors, the speed of the agitator is kept at a relatively low level and horizontal baffles are provided. Here, RTD in the gas and liquid phases may show different behavior compared to a small-scale unit. [Pg.94]

There are three mid-sized mechanical contractors, qualified to do industrial piping and equipment erection, with demonstrated capability of handling projects requiring more than seventy workers. Two of them also have piping fabrication shops and asked to be considered for the prefabricated piping purchase. All of them asked to bid for the structural steel erection. [Pg.369]

Plastic working of a metal such as steel is the permanent deformation accomplished by applying mechanical forces to a metal surface. The primary objective is usually the production of a specific shape or size (mechanical shaping), although increasingly it also involves the improvement of certain physical and mechanical properties of the metal (mechanical treatment). These two objectives can be readily attained simultaneously. [Pg.383]

Manufacturing can be defined as the application of physical and chemical processes to modify the properties of a given start material in terms of its form, shape, size, mechanical characteristics, external appearance, etc., in order to fabricate a single part representing a product or multiple parts to be assembled to form a complex product. In order to perform a manufacturing process, it is necessary to utilize appropriated machines, tools, fixtures, energy, and manpower (Fig. 1). [Pg.829]

We will now give some illustrative examples of the importance of different surface chemistry related mechanisms for sizing, concentrating chiefly on AKD sizing, but also with a mention of some aspects of ASA and rosin sizing. In addition to sizing mechanisms, some useful techniques for measuring the surface chemical... [Pg.140]

The membrane material is formed into structures by a variety of processes that are adequately described elsewhere [Gutman, 1987], The membrane structure depends upon many factors ease of manu cture, desired retention size, mechanical integrity, chemical and physical resistance, etc. Three basic structures are commonly used homogeneous, asymmetric and conq>osite these are illustrated in Figure 10.1. [Pg.360]
