Salicylic acid resin

Salicylic acid resin has also been used as a polymeric support material for FeCl3 Lewis acid [24]. This catalyst had high catalytic efficiency in ester synthesis and acetalization. [Pg.951]

Phenolic resins were the first totally synthetic plastics invented. They were commercialized by 1910 [I]. Their history begins before the development of the structural theory of chemistry and even before Kekule had his famous dreams of snakes biting their tails. It commences with Gerhardt s 1853 observations of insoluble resin formation while dehydrating sodium salicylate [2]. These were followed by similar reports on the behavior of salicylic acid derivatives under a variety of reaction conditions by Schroder et al. (1869), Baeyer (1872), Velden (1877), Doebner (1896 and 1898), Speyer (1897) and Baekeland (1909-1912) [3-17]. Many of these early reports appear to involve the formation of phenolic polyesters rather than the phenol-aldehyde resins that we think of today. For... [Pg.869]

Hydroxybenzoic acids are easily eonverted into hydroxybenzotrifluorides by treatment with sulfur tetrafluoride in a hydrogen fluoride solution under mild conditions [2/5] An exception is salicylic acid, which becomes a resin, however, a 70-75% yield of 2-hydroxybenzotrifluoride can be obtained by carrying out the fluonnation in a mixture of three parts of hydrogen fluoride and one part of benzene [216] (equation 110)... [Pg.246]

The CB sheet is coated on the back with microcapsules 5 to 10 pm in diameter, in which leuco dye solution in a nonvolatile solvent is contained. The CF sheet is coated on the front with an acidic coreactant such as reactive clay, zinc salt of salicylic acid derivatives, zinc-modified phenolic resin, etc. On the application of pressure, the microcapsule is ruptured in the area delineated by the pressure pattern, and the leuco dye solution is thereby transferred to the CB sheet to bring about a color-forming reaction with acidic coreactant resulting in a distinct image on the surface of the CF sheet. By inserting a middle sheet (or sheets) called the CFB sheet, which is coated on the front and back with acidic coreactant and microcapsules, respectively, multiple copies can be obtained. [Pg.197]

The CF sheet is prepared by coating an acidic coreactant such as naturally occurring reactive clay, zinc salt of salicylic acid derivatives and zinc modified phenolic resin. [Pg.198]

As mentioned in the historical synopsis (Section 5.1), Levine121 perfected the compendial partition column procedure in which aspirin in chloroform is first trapped in an immobile phase of sodium bicarbonate on a column of siliceous earth (celite) then eluted with a solution of acetic acid in chloroform and measured spectrophotometrically. This has been also used for separation in combination products.80 For the determination of salicylic acid in presence of aspirin by this method, see Section 5.61. Ion exchange columns filled with strongly or weakly basic anion exchange resin in the acetate or chloride cycle have also been used for separation of aspirin in combination products. 122 123/l2lf This has also been adapted for a student experiment.125 A Sepha-dex-G25 column has been used for the separation of aspirin from salicylic acid.126... [Pg.26]

Phenol has a wide range of uses, including in the preparation of phenolic and epoxy resins (bisphenol-A), nylon-6 (caprolactam), 2,4-D, selective solvents for refining lubricating oils, adipic acid, salicylic acid, phenolphthalein, pentachlorophenol and other derivatives in germicidal paints as a laboratory reagent and in dyes and indicators and as a slimicide, biocide and general disinfectant (Lewis, 1993). The world demand for phenol by use in 1993 was reported as (%) phenolic resins, 35 bisphenol-A, 30 caprolactam, 15 alkylphenols, 7 aniline, 5 and others, 8 (Wallace, 1996). [Pg.750]

The handling and disposal problems associated with the use of liquid solvent extractors have resulted in increased attention to the separation and preconcentration of organic compounds in water by collection in synthetic polymers followed by elution with an organic solvent (2). For example, selective collection and concentration of organic bases on methylacrylic ester resin from dilute water samples have been reported (3). Such collection techniques are especially well-suited to flow-injection measurement techniques. In this study, ionizable organic analytes such as salicylic acid and 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) were extracted into a polymer and then back extracted by an aqueous solution. Amperometric measurement using a flow-injection technique was employed to monitor the process. [Pg.344]

Major uses of phenol include production of phenolic resins, epoxy resins, and 2,4-D (regulated in many countries) as a selective solvent for refining lubricating oils in the manufacture of adipic acid, salicylic acid, phenophthalein, pentachlorophenol, acetophenetidine, picric acid germicidal paints, and pharmaceuticals as well as use as a laboratory reagent. Special uses include dyes and indicators, and slimicides. [Pg.1274]

Furfural-salicylic acid and furfural-P-naphthalenesulfonic acid resins possess thermal stabilityexceeding that of KU-1 (sulfonated phenol-formaldehyde resin) and approaching that of KU-2 (sulfonated SDVB copolymer). The heat resistance of toluenesulfonic acid-furfural resin is quite similar to that of KU-2 resin. The improved thermal stability of furfural-based cation-exchange resins is attributed to the presence of heterocyclic and aromatic rings in these resins. [Pg.88]
