Podophyllum resin

PodophyUotoxin (Podofllox) is available alone and as the main cytotoxic ingredient in podophylUn (25% podophyllum resin), a mixture of toxic chemicals derived from May apple plants. The active ingredients inhibit cell mitosis. The drugs are used to treat condylomata acuminata. The most common toxic effects are skin irritation and less commonly, ulceration. Systemic... [Pg.492]

Podophyllum resin, an alcoholic extract of Podophyllum palatum is used in the treatment of condyloma acuminatum and other verrucae. [Pg.453]

Podophyllum resin, an alcoholic extract of Podophyllum peltatum, commonly known as mandrake root or May apple, is used in the treatment of condyloma acuminatum and other verrucae. It is a mixture of podophyllotoxin, and peltatin, desoxypodophyllotoxin, dehydropodophyllotoxin, and other compounds. It is soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, and compound tincture of benzoin. [Pg.1303]

Percutaneous absorption of podophyllum resin occurs, particularly in intertriginous areas and from applications to large moist condylomas. It is soluble in lipids and therefore is distributed widely throughout the body, including the central nervous system. [Pg.1303]

Podophyllotoxin and its derivatives are active cytotoxic agents with specific affinity for the microtubule protein of the mitotic spindle. Normal assembly of the spindle is prevented, and epidermal mitoses are arrested in metaphase. A 25% concentration of podophyllum resin in compound tincture of benzoin is recommended for the treatment of condyloma acuminatum. Application should be restricted to wart tissue only, to limit the total amount of medication used and to prevent severe erosive changes in adjacent tissue. In treating cases of large condylomas, it is advisable to limit application to sections of the affected area to minimize systemic absorption. The patient is instructed to wash off the preparation 2-3 hours after the initial application, since the irritant reaction is variable. Depending on the individual patient s reaction, this period can be extended to 6-8 hours on subsequent applications. If three to five applications have not resulted in significant resolution, other methods of treatment should be considered. [Pg.1464]

SYNS PODOPHYLLUM PODOPHYLLUM RESIN SAFETY PROFILE Poison by ingestion, subcutaneous, and intraperitoneal routes. An irritant to skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Questionable carcinogen with experimental neoplastigenic data. An experimental teratogen. Other experimental reproductive effects. Combustible when exposed to heat or flames. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. [Pg.1137]

The development of the natural constituents of Podophyllum Resin into effective semisynthetic and, ultimately, totally synthetic compounds for the treatment of various kinds of cancer provides one of the most sustained and intriguing stories of drug discovery (92, 93). [Pg.865]

A woman who applied podophyllum resin five times for a duration of 4 hours from the 23rd to the 29th week of pregnancy gave birth to a child with a simian crease on the left hand and a preauricular skin tag (11). [Pg.2880]

Podophyllin (podophyllum resin) is a mixture of chemicals from the plant Podophyllum peltatum (mandrake or May apple). The major constituent of the resin is podophyllotoxin (podofilox). It binds to microtubules and causes mitotic arrest in metaphase. Podophyllum resin (10 0%) is applied and left in place for 2-6 hours weekly for the treatment of anogenital warts. Irritation and ulcerative local reactions are the major side effects. It should not be used in the mouth or during pregnancy. Podofilox (CONDYLOX, others) is available as a 0.5% solution for application twice daily for 3 consecutive days. Weekly cycles may be repeated. [Pg.1093]

A wart is a benign lesion characterized as a hard, homy nodule on the hands and feet. Warts are removed by freezing, electrodesiccation, or surgical excision using topical treatments sahcychc acid, podophyllum resin, and cantharidin. [Pg.407]

Podophyllum resin is used to remove venereal warts. [Pg.408]

A normal infant was born at term 3 months after the mother was accidentally administered 1 g of podophyllum resin orally (Balucani and Zellers 1964). [Pg.683]

An 18-year-old woman in her 34th week of pregnancy experienced severe peripheral neuropathy followed by intrauterine death of the fetus after professional application of a 25% solution of podophyllum resin in tincture of benzoin on vulval warts. A total of 7.5 ml (equivalent to 1.88 g podophyllum) was applied. The woman was under general anesthesia at the time of application. After 3 months, the woman was walking without aid and was able to type, but very slowly and clumsily. Complete recovery from neuropathy and a subsequent healthy pregnancy was reported (Chamberlain et al. 1972). [Pg.686]
