Statement on the Eole of Dieta Management in Hypertension Control, National High Blood Pressure Education Program and Coordinating Committee, Bethesda, Md., 1979. [Pg.186]

The use of the potassium salt of benzoic acid is relatively new. Concerns regarding sodium intake and its possible relationship to high blood pressure have caused some soft drink manufacturers to switch to potassium benzoate. [Pg.56]

Medical researchers studying high blood pressure have consistently found that people with hypertension have high blood levels of some sort of Na, K -... [Pg.303]

These, and related, iron nitrosyl compounds have excited considerable interest because of their biological activity.Nitroprusside induces muscle relaxation and is therefore used to control high blood pressure. Roussin s black salt has antibacterial activity under conditions relevant to... [Pg.1094]

Dihydropyridines not only are intermediates for the synthesis of pyridines, but also are themselves an important class of N-heterocycles an example is the coenzyme NADH. Studies on the function of NADH led to increased interest in the synthesis of dihydropyridines as model compounds. Aryl-substituted dihy-dropyridines have been shown to be physiologically active as calcium antagonists. Some derivatives have found application in the therapy of high blood pressure and angina pectoris. For that reason the synthesis of 1,4-dihydropyridines has been the subject of intensive research and industrial use. The Hantzsch synthesis has thus become an important reaction. [Pg.153]

Many dihydropyridines that are of therapeutic interest are unsymmetrically substituted at C-3 and C-5. The synthesis of such compounds is possible from separately prepared Knoevenagel condensation products 6, as is outlined in the following scheme for nitrendipine 8, which is used in the medical treatment of high blood pressure." ... [Pg.153]

Recent consensus committees, including the Sixth Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC VI) and the World Health Organization-International Society of Hypertension (WHO-ISH) Guidelines Subcommittee, have modified traditional treatment recommendations in several important ways. [Pg.142]

Historically the only melanocortin peptide to be used clinically is the parent hormone from which all these peptides are derived from namely ACTH (see above). It has also been used in the treatment infantile spasms for epilepsy, where it is administered as an intramuscular injection only over a 2-12 weeks period. Obvious side effects include weight gain, puffy face, high blood pressure and an increased risk of infection and should never be administered to patients with diabetics, renal or heart failure. ACTH is also used as a stimulation test to measure adrenal cortex activity, i.e. production of cortisol and is used to ascertain whether someone has Addison s disease. [Pg.753]

When a patient is to have nose drops instilled for nasal congestion, the nurse examines the nasal passages and describes the type of secretions present in the nose The nurse also should obtain the blood pressure because nose drops that contain adrenergic dragp are not given to those with high blood pressure... [Pg.205]

Caffeine (oral, nonprescription) Avoid the use of oral caffeine-containing products to stay awake if tiiere is a history of heart disease high blood pressure, or stomach ulcers. These products are intended for occasional use and should not be used if heart palpitations, dizziness, or light-headedness occurs. [Pg.251]

One serious adverse reaction associated with the use of the MAOIs is hypertensive crisis (extremely high blood pressure), which may occur when foods containing tyramine (an amino acid present in some foods) are eaten (see Home Care Checklist Avoiding Drug Food Interactions With MAOIs). [Pg.282]

From the Sxth Report of the Joint National Committee on FYevention, Detection, B/aluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure, National High Blood Pressure Education Program, November 1997. (Online.) Available www.nhlbi.nih.gov/gu.delines/hypertension... [Pg.394]

Diaz oxide (Hyperstat IV) and nitroprusside (Nitropress) are examples of intravenous (IV) drugs that may be used to treat hypertensive emergencies. A hypertensive emergency is a case of extremely high blood pressure that does not respond to conventional antihypertensive drug therapy. [Pg.397]

High levels of sodium in the diet are linked to high blood pressure. Doctors often recommend that individuals who need to lower their blood pressure limit their sodium intake, but the sodium in table salt is a big part of most people s diets. They can turn to salt substitutes instead. [Pg.89]
