Distinctness of image

Samples indicating the acceptable range of color, gloss, metallic brilliance, grain and texture, and distinctness of image may be needed and, if not provided by your customer, those that you provide will need customer approval. [Pg.370]

The most Important measures of appearance are gloss and distinctness of image. In pigmented coatings gloss decreases on exposure as the polymer coating erodes away and exposes pigment particles. [Pg.90]

A unique two-coat, topcoat system is used in the automobile industry. A basccoat is applied to a primed surface to provide opacity, color, and a metallic appearance, while the clearcoat provides gloss mid a miiioilike finish (referred to as distinctness of image). [Pg.1199]

The physical parameters for the metallic effect, which influence the ratio between reflection and scattering and thereby the flop effect, the lightness and brightness, the brilliance and sparkle, the gloss and the distinctiveness of image (DOI) etc. etc. can simply be described in terms of particle size, particle shape (morphology), particle size distribution and particle orientation in the film... [Pg.256]

Specular gloss and the distinctness of image are of practical importance. In many paint uses maximum gloss is required. Humans experience gloss as particularly brilliant if images are reflected with clear definition from a plane surface. Various forms of black-white contrasts are formed on the paint surface for the visual evaluation of the distinctness of image (DOI). [Pg.227]

In order to measure the distinctness of image, attempts were made to obtain a second reflectometer value at a larger receiver-side aperture angle and to combine the two reflectometer values in such a way that the measured values could be assigned to the relevant visual evaluations. Sophisticated instruments are now available, in which the reflected image of a grating projected onto the surface is analyzed by means of Fourier transformations. [Pg.227]

Distinctness-of-image gloss n. The sharpness with which image outlines are reflected by the surface of an object. [Pg.316]

Related to specular gloss is distinctness-of-image (DOI) gloss. A perfect specular reflector is a perfect mirror. If a surface has perfect diffuse reflection, no mirror image can be seen. At intermediate stages, the image is more and more blurred as the ratio of specular to diffuse reflection decreases. Often one sees both blurring and distortion. [Pg.1455]

It is apparent that the treated pigment, unlike the untreated one is defloccu-lated. It also exhibits significantly lower viscosity, improved gloss, and improved distinctiveness of image in the resulting finish. Some of the quinacridone derivatives mentioned above also serve as effective inhibitors of particle size growth. [Pg.325]

Sheen shen n (1602) An attribute of object mode of appearance which is similar to luster gloss with poor distinctness-of-image reflectance. Frequently, in the paint industry, sheen is used synonomously with low-angle sheen a characteristic where a material appears to be matte when illuminated and viewed near to the perpendicular, but appears to be glossy when illuminated and viewed at an angle near to the grazing angle, such as 85° off the perpendicular. Sheen is therefore... [Pg.657]

For white paints, rutile grades of titanium dioxide are incorporated at pigment/binder ratios from 0.6/1 for automotive finishes, where very high gloss levels and DOFs (Distinctiveness of Image) are required, to 1.3/1 for metal decorating enamels where opacity is of prime concern. [Pg.234]

As stated earlier, cellulose acetate butyrate can be used successfully to modify the flow of non-isocyanate acrylics. However, in certain instances this can affect the distinction of image and brightness of the finish. Again, the use of a polysiloxane derivative would be recommended as a replacement. [Pg.334]
