Safety inspections types

The second type of monitoring Sis are constructed from tools such as (safety) inspections, and (safety) observational programmes. These tools are numerous, van Steen (van Steen, 1996) amongst others provides an overview of many different technical and human based inspections utilized by different companies in the chemical process industry. The aim of this type of tool is to check the presence and effectiveness of technical and human safety measures. This safe way of working is compared with standards (technical and human) and expert opinion to indicate... [Pg.46]

Irregular internal PAI-type audits of operations, like safety inspections, enable the company to maintain its vigilance and ensure that its operations are sustained at a high level of compliance with agency regulations. [Pg.139]

The inspection of equipment in-service and in the process of failure presents a very dangerous problem to the inspector. The corrosion inspector must take the utmost care in such a situation in order to avoid both injuries and contamination of the environment. It is no exaggeration to state that this problem presents a significant challenge to the inspector. An example of this type of inspection is a leaking condensate-storage tank under pressure. In this situation it is important that the operation is shut down before beginning the safety inspection. [Pg.198]

For supervisors. Three types of safety inspections continuous inspections, formal in-house inspections, and formal inspections with help of outside inspector. Part of 15-volume series, Supervisors Development Program. ... [Pg.187]

Type A service includes an inspection (some carriers refer to this as a safety inspection ), and minor repair and maintenance. The maintenance may include (at a minimum) lubrication, various adjustments, check of tires, check of the brake system (including brake adjustment), and may include an oil change, depending on the vehicle and application. [Pg.510]

An Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) worksite safety inspection. There are five types of site inspections that OSHA conducts. These are listed as follows in their order of importance, as determined by OSHA ... [Pg.219]

Because of a concern for the safety of you and your family, you probably periodically conduct a safety inspection of your car, looking at things such as tire wear and working brake lights. But do you do the same type of inspection on the job ... [Pg.9]

The site plan concept provides an overall view of plants requiring safety inspection and establishing an early warning system for possible changes of use or process. Within this general control, detailed controls may be elaborated. If it is desired to Introduce a new plant on the site, a more detailed plant specification must then be produced. This specification must indicate the type of process to be introduced, the nature of the materials to be processed, the nature and volume of likely wastes, the main nuclear hazards, aiid a Design Safety Report, which is a statement of the principles and means for the control of safety. This information must be submitted to the Inspectorate before the licensee begins to construct the new plant on his site. [Pg.472]

The commonest way to introduce order into safety inspection is to use checklists, and there are many examples—most textbooks on safety contain at least one. Although the examples can be used as models, the best checklists are those constructed for a particular workplace. The basis for them all, though, is much the same. They comprise a list of types of hazard, together with a list of how hazards could manifest themselves. Within a museum workshop, the main types of hazard are likely to be fire, chemicals, electricity, radiation, machinery, handling equipment, micro-organisms and the general work layout. Most of these are self-evident from a quick inspection of the workplace. [Pg.94]

Another indicator of the vitahty of this scientific topic is the number of reviews that has flourished over the last years no less than 23 reviews have been pubhshed since 2007 Most deal with hyperspectral (HS) techniques for food and agrofood quality and safety inspection [4-18] and, except for Kim et al. [14], who focus on shortwave NIR and visible, they generally include not only NIR HS vision but also visible, Raman, and fluorescence imaging. Others focus on one type of commodity, such as fruit [19-21], meat [6], hams [22], wine wastes [23], or one specific issue such as fecal and microbial contamination [24]. [Pg.295]

So, in a way, safety audits are similar to safety inspections. There is much to be gained in performing audits, inspections, and similar types of activities. These activities are what I consider to be cheap insurance. If we are paying our insurance premiums, we should consider retention of safety audit activities however, due to the longer-term effects that an audit has when compared to an inspection, some adjustments to the audit program would be acceptable. [Pg.255]

Walk-arounds are used to conduct ongoing daily safety inspections of the workplace. This type of inspection identifies obvious or observable blatant hazards or visible risk that may be related to unsafe work practices or conditions. If properly conducted, it is effective in identifying active error potential but is not as effective in identifying latent error potential (US DOE, 2009). [Pg.106]

TMS Consultancy has undertaken several road safety inspections in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. Two examples of the type of problems identified are shown below. [Pg.175]

The degree of inspection and monitoring work employed must be tailored to the types of boiler units under consideration. For the smallest boilers, this tends to be minimal, but it is extremely comprehensive for the largest industrial power, cogeneration, and utility plants. The only commonality is the need to ensure continuous operational safety. [Pg.623]

Property damage and loss of production must also be considered in loss prevention. These losses can be substantial. Accidents of this type are much more common than fatalities. This is demonstrated in the accident pyramid shown in Figure 1-3. The numbers provided are only approximate. The exact numbers vary by industry, location, and time. No Damage accidents are frequently called near misses and provide a good opportunity for companies to determine that a problem exists and to correct it before a more serious accident occurs. It is frequently said that the cause of an accident is visible the day before it occurs. Inspections, safety reviews and careful evaluation of near misses will identify hazardous conditions that can be corrected before real accidents occur. [Pg.11]

Strength Habitability surveys conducted at CP (command post) upon arrival of Haz-Mat team. EPA conducted surveys at CP upon their arrival. SRS (Savannah River Site) and Richmond County Haz-Mat resources arrived on scene within a timely manner and were designated by FDIC (Fire Department Incident Commander) to be responsible for Haz-Mat operations. Haz-Mat personnel assisted in CP location determination. EPA utilized Coast Guard Gulf Coast Strike Team to provide monitoring and on scene response. By comparing consist (a list of all the cars in the train which describes their position in the train, type, contents, destination, etc.) to entry team visual inspection, chemicals involved were accurately identified. Written response plan and safety procedures implemented for Haz-Mat operations. Briefings provided to Haz-Mat responders by Safety Officer on entry considerations maps were covered for responders unfamiliar with the area. [Pg.9]

Safety audits are evolutionary—details change as knowledge is gained. In addition, special sections may be added to the basic audit to cover unique differences of location, type of operation, product, and equipment. Dow safety and loss prevention people have a slogan You get what you inspect, not what you expect. ... [Pg.310]

Regular inspections of SRVs are necessary to ensure safety. However, here we should define regular, taking into account that inspections are also cosdy and potentially destructive. A delicate balance between safety and cost must be obtained. This is a very complex problem involving multiple factors that include the individual valve s application, pressure, temperature, medium, age, size and type. The problem here is that it is difficult to generalize for the complete valve part. [Pg.230]

Recommended inspection intervals for Safety Valves by equipment type ... [Pg.236]

Occasionally, there may be business pressures or maintenance scheduling problems that would encourage the delay of prooftesting of safety critical alarms and shutdown systems. Such situations can also delay of vessel inspections and safety relief valve testing. Some type of variance procedure or review policy should be defined to handle this occasional need. Such a policy ought to require the review of all of the inspection and test records on the specific equipment involved as well as an approval of the superintendent of the area. [Pg.272]

There must be an approval mechanism to reduce unnecessary inspection and testing if repeated testing shows ideal performance. Many test frequencies are initially self-imposed to be annual, which could be too frequent. Those type of changes should have an approval trail which includes the unit manager, or second-level supervisor, the critical instrument testing supervisor and a process safety representative. [Pg.272]
