An Overall View

An electrochemical system runs on the basis of charge-transfer reactions at the electrode-electrolyte interfaces. These reactions involve ions or molecules that are constituents of the electrolyte. Thus, the transport of particles to or away from the interface becomes an essential condition for the continued electrochemical transformation of reactants at the interface. [Pg.418]

One of the basic mechanisms of ionic transport is diffusion. This type of transport occurs when the concentration of the diffusing species is different in different parts of the electrolyte. What makes diffusion occur This question can be answered on a macroscopic and on a microscopic level. [Pg.418]

When the driving force is small, it may be taken to be linearly related to the flux. On this basis, an equation can be derived for the rate of steady-state diffusion, which is identical in form to the empirical first law of Pick, [Pg.418]

The microscopic view of diffusion starts with the movements of individual ions. Ions dart about haphazardly, executing a random walk. By an analysis of one-dimensional random walk, a simple law can be derived (see Section 4.2.6) for the mean square distance-cc traversedby an ionin atimef. This is theEinstein-Smoluchowski equation [Pg.419]

The first law of Pick tells one how the concentration gradient is related to the flux under steady-state conditions it says nothing about how the system goes from nonequilibrium to steady state when a diffusion source or sink is set up inside or at the boundary of the system. Thus, it says nothing about how the concentration changes with time at different distances from the source or sink. In other words. Pick s first law is inapplicable to nonsteady-state diffusion. For this, one has to go to Pick s second law [Pg.419]


More than two-thirds of the naphthenic acid produced is used to make metal salts, with the largest volume being used for copper naphthenate, consumed in the wood preservative industry (see Wood). GPC columns are offered for different molar mass intervals for larger intervals it is possible to combine some columns of different pore size types or to combine a few so-called mixed bed or linear columns.
