Early warning system

This on-going research aims at a) environmental monitoring and b) the development, after further research and collaboration with an instrument manufacturer, of a prototype portable flow toxicity meter as an early warning system for pollution.

Note that the protein kinase, which phosphorylates the IF-GDP complex is structurally similar to the protein kinase that is activated by double-stranded RNA, i.e. the genome of some viruses. This protein kinase phosphorylates the IF-GDP complex in an infected host cell, so that viral peptide synthesis is inhibited and the virus cannot multiply. Synthesis of this kinase is stimulated by the cytokine, interferon, which is released by virus-infected cells as an early-warning system to adjacent cells not yet infected (Chapter 17 see Figure 17.32). 

The hemopexin heme transport system thus acts as an early warning system for cells by activating signaling pathways (including the N-terminal c-Jun kinase, kinases to release RbIA/NFkB family members for nuclear translocation) and transcription of the HO-1 and MT-1 genes. The details of this aspect of hemopexin function with redox-active copper as an initial event in the coordinated induction of HO-1 and MT-1 by heme-hemopexin have recently been reviewed (89) and are not presented in detail here. 

The septal organ is a small patch of sensory epithelium on the wall of the septum, in the anterior part of the nasal cavity, and ventral to the olfactory epithelium. It is found primarily in rodents, has chemical receptors similar to olfactory receptors, and is sensitive to volatile odorants. It projects into the main olfactory bulb, but not into the accessory olfactoiy bulb (Pedersen and Benson, 1986). Because of its forward location, the septal organ may serve as an early-warning system that arouses resting or sleeping animals when volatiles are present (Wysocki, 1989).

An important condition to be fulfilled in order to use the method for detection of sweat formation and its composition is that the electrodes are elec-trolytically in contact with each other. This is not a strict condition for urine detection and as an early-warning system for diabetes, because in these applications a qualitative detection is enough, and therefore one can start with dry electrodes. For diagnosis of cystic fibrosis, this is not possible because here a quantitative detection of salt concentration is expected. Table 2.2 summarises the results obtained for all of the water samples. A very good correspondence between spiked and experimentally obtained results was observed. A relative experimental error in most cases was <10% indicating the possibility of using these electrodes as an early warning system in the event of a large contamination of natural waters with cesium, such as in the event of a nuclear reactor accident, e.g., Chernobyl, or the detonation of a dirty bomb . 

Center for Environmental Health Flemish biomonitoring program for surveillance of environmental health Program will include development of an early warning system based on biomarker measurements in people living in Flanders. Study population includes 1,600 people (European Commission 2004). 

These features are then passed on to machine learning algorithms to classify the signals. In particular, multifractal properties are a clear indicator of arrhythmia in ECG signals. The onset of deformity in the ECG signal has a signature pattern that can be used to predict the onset of a heart attack. Scinova proposes to exploit this feature of Rx as an early warning system for intensive care units.
