Unit sales prices of from 800 to 900 fine chemicals are fisted weekly in the Chemical Marketing Reporter. This number reflects those fine chemicals produced and sold in industrial quantities. Some market studies on fine chemicals, fisting important product families, such as side chains for P-lactam antibiotics (qv). A/- and A-heterocycfic compounds, fluoroaromatics, etc, do exist (14,15).

Raw material costs should be estimated by direct computation from flow rates and material prices. The flow rates are deterrnined from flow sheet material balances. The unit prices are obtained from vendors, company purchasing departments, or the Chemical Marketing Reporter. For captive raw materials produced internally, a suitable transfer price must be estabHshed. Initial catalyst charges can be treated as a start-up expense, working capital component, or depreciable capital, depending on the expected catalyst life and cost. Makeup catalyst is frequendy treated as a raw material. 

The Chemical Marketing Reporter tabulates the current list price for many chemicals. These prices, like off the cuff estimates from vendors, tend to be conservative. The European Chemical News also publishes chemical prices for many places in the world. These prices are sometimes better to use for raw materials. 

A zeolite catalyst operated at 1 atm and 325-500 K is so active that the reaction approaches equilibrium. Suppose that stack gas having the equilibrium composition calculated in Example 7.17 is cooled to 500 K. Ignore any reactions involving CO and CO2. Assume the power plant burns methane to produce electric power with an overall efficiency of 70%. How much ammonia is required per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in order to reduce NO , emissions by a factor of 10, and how much will the purchased ammonia add to the cost of electricity. The American journal Chemical Marketing Reporter, CMR (2004), publishes a weekly review of prices for most chemicals. The prices for a limited number of chemicals in Europe can be found in European Chemical News, ECN (2004). U.S. prices, converted to the local currency at the current rate of exchange, can be used as a guide to the probable price in other countries. An indication of the prices of a selected range of chemicals is given in Table 6.4 (see p. 263).

However, the values reported in such sources will be subject to short-term fluctuations, and long-term forecasts will be required for investment analysis.

Even the spot price of most chemicals is under 2 per pound. Spot prices on September 28, 1981, as published by the Chemical Marketing Reporter, indicated that of 2,684 chemicals sold by the pound or kilogram, 1,516 or 56 percent were priced below 2 per pound. About 39 percent were priced below 1 per pound, 19 percent were below 50 cents per pound and 4 percent were below 25 cents per pound. Such prices tend to be higher than the long-term contract prices under which chemicals are usually sold. Thus, the curves in Figure A show the applicable range of costs and output.
