Policy instruments (see Table 19.5) to meet the various sustainability targets may be classified into infrastructure investment, traffic demand management (TDM), regulation, pricing and support research and development (R D) in new technologies. Each of these measures consists of several variants, which will, however, not be considered in detail in this volume. The following matrix undertakes an attempt to propose the appropriateness of the various classes of policy measures to meet specific subobjectives of a sustainable transport development.

Deliver processes that provide finished goods and services to meet planned or actual demand, typically including order management, transportation management, and distribution management. 

The flows of wastewater originating from the water supply of a community and runoff from precipitation on urban surfaces are typically collected and conveyed for treatment and disposal. The system used for this purpose is called a sewer network or a collection system that consists of individual pipes (sewer lines) and a number of installations, such as inlet structures and pumps, to facilitate collection and transport. The efficient, safe and cost-effective collection and transport of wastewater and urban runoff have been identified as key criteria to be observed. In this context, the word safe means that public health, welfare and environmental protection have high priority. The demand for solutions toward more sustainable water management in the cities is a new challenge. 

Over the past several decades there have been increasingly strong demands in Europe and the United States that atmospheric chemistry research be directly useful in developing scientific risk assessments and public policies. For example, one component of the EUROTRAC program (European Experiment on Transport and Transformation of Environmentally Relevant Trace Constituents in the Troposphere) ...is expected to assimilate the scientific results from EUROTRAC and present them in a condensed form, together with recommendations where appropriate, so that they are suitable for use by those responsible for environmental planning and management in Europe (EUROTRAC, 1993).
