Process and Materials

For high temperature fuel ceUs, there is stiU a strong need to develop lower cost materials for ceU components. In the case of SOFCs, improved fabrication processes and materials that permit acceptable performance in fuel ceUs at lower operating temperatures are also highly desirable. [Pg.586]

Equipment Costs. Equipment costs include the purchased cost of process and materials handling equipment, storage faciUties, waste treatment equipment, stmctures, and site service faciUties. Installation costs such as insulation, piping, painting and finishing, foundations, process stmctures, instmmentation, and electrical service connections are estimated or factored separately. Actual quoted prices from suppHers are the best data, but these are not usually available when estimates are made. The quick, inexpensive cost estimates are based largely on personal cost files, internal company cost data, or pubUshed cost correlations. [Pg.441]

Enamel Defects. Characterization of defects in porcelain enamel surfaces frequently requites detailed examination via microscopy to determine the sources of the defects. Defects ate divided into processing and material defects. The greatest number of defects result from processing bhsters, pinholes, black specks, dimples, tool marks, and chipping. Defects often occur from unobserved sources at almost every stage of the enameling process, but they ate not recognizable until the ware is fired. Conscientious process control helps to minimize the incidents of unacceptable finishes. [Pg.218]

Tolerance stack analysis - Tolerances on components that are assembled together to achieve an overall design tolerance across an assembly can be individually analysed, their potential variability predicted and their combined effect on the overall conformance determined. The analysis can be used to optimize the design through the explorations of alternative tolerances, processes and materials with the goal of minimizing the costs of non-conformance. This topic is discussed in depth in Chapter 3. [Pg.76]

PSM and ESH issues are similar at each location. This is most likely to be the case if the manufaauring processes and materials are similar. [Pg.75]

Most equipment failures occur under abnonnal conditions, especially elevated pressures and temperatures. The design of equipment presents internal and external constraints. External limits may arise from physical laws, while internal limits may depend on tlie process and materials. In any case, if these limits are exceeded, tlie chance of an accident is greatly increased. [Pg.463]
