International limits for contaminants (4) are arsenic 0.2 mg/liter, volatile acidity 20 meq/liter for 10 vol % ethanol and 1 meq more for each per cent alcohol above 10%, lead 0.6 mg/liter, boron 80 mg/liter (as boric acid), bromine (total) 1 mg/liter (may be higher for wines from grapes of certain areas), bromine (organic) 0.0, fluorine 5 mg/liter, malvidin diglucoside 15 mg/liter, sodium 60 mg/liter (may be higher for wines from grapes of certain areas), and sulfate 1.5 grams/liter (as potassium sulfate). 

The suggested international limit for arsenic of 0.2 mg/liter should not be difficult to meet. Arsenate insecticides are not used in the United States and are seldom used abroad. While simple tests for the presence of arsenic are available, its quantitative determination is time consuming, involving ashing, special equipment, and meticulous technique and cleanliness. 

Lead likewise should seldom if ever be found in wines approaching the suggested international limit of 0.6 mg/liter. The procedure by ashing and color development with dithiozone (or other reagent) is also time consuming and meticulous. Even with atomic absorption spectrophotometry there are losses in ashing and laboratory lead pick-up. Probably the best new attachments are those where the wine can be ashed directly in the apparatus. 

Boron (as boric acid) has a suggested international limit of 80 mg/liter. The probable source is soil or irrigation water, and several procedures are available for its determination. 

Fluorine (or fluorides) has a suggested international limit of 5 mg/liter. Fluoride pickup occurs only in the rare case where concrete tanks may have been treated with fluosilicate. With the disappearance of concrete tanks and prohibition of fluosilicate which may contaminate food, this determination should be superfluous. It is done on an ashed sample distillation of fluosilicic acid with super-heated steam and titration with thorium nitrate in the presence of sodium alizarinsulfonate. 

The retina consists of 10 layers the RPE, photoreceptor outer segments, external limiting membrane (ELM), outer nuclear layer, outer plexiform layer, inner nuclear layer, inner plexiform layer, ganglion cell layer, nerve fiber layer, and internal limiting membrane (ILM). The term neurosensory retina includes all the above except the most external layer, the RPE. 

Vascular cell nuclei are considered to be associated with neovascularization if they are on the vitreous side of the internal limiting membrane. Only endothelial cell nuclei that are clearly part of a vessel structure with a discernable lumen in any plane are included in our analysis (Fig. 5.2). All such cells are counted unless...

Accurate predictions of solute interactions with a limited number of solvent molecules are possible using the supermolecular approximation. This is an approach based on the consideration of the dissolved molecule together with the limited number of solvent molecules as the unified system. The quantum-chemical calculations are performed on the complex of the solute molecule surrounded by as many solvent molecules as possible. The main advantage of the supermolecular approximation is the ability to take into account such specific effects of solvation as hydrogen bonding between the selected sites of the solvated molecules and the molecules of the solvent. In principle there are only two restrictions for the supermolecular approximation. One of them is the internal limitations of the quantum-chemical methods. The second restriction is the limitation of the current computer technology. Because of such restrictions this approximation coupled with ab initio molecular dynamics is possible only for small model systems.46-50...
