Swirling flows are inherently three dimensional. The authors current PIV system measures only two velocity components. A newly acquired stereoscopic PIV system will be used to characterize the 3D flowfield. In addition, pollutant characteristics of high-pressure partially-premixed swirling flames will also be obtained. Together with the PIV velocity and acoustic measurements, a full characterization of both pollutant and noise emissions from such flames will be achieved. It is believed that this will help improve the fundamental understanding of these types of emissions from modern gas-turbine combustors and will provide a valuable database for validating LES models. [Pg.220]

Preliminary numerical work has involved benchmarking of the LES research code and the FLUENT-LES code. The LES research code is currently being used to simulate the flow in a lean-premixed dump combustor for which benchmark data is available. Seawater, available at the premises of the Royal Netherlands Navy s Chemical Laboratory, was sub-sampled. This coastal seawater was initially collected at about lOm water depth, in the nearby tidal channel (Marsdiep). The water passed a sand filter directly after collection, in order to remove larger particles and organisms. About lOm seawater was thus collected in a glass-fibre tank and transported to the TNO Laboratory for Applied Marine Research, at Den Helder, where it was contained in a concrete basin, treated with a metal-free paint. In this basin the suspended particulate matter was allowed to settle for 4 weeks. This water served as source material for the candidate CRM, and had a salinity of 28 %o. [Pg.368]

Teflon tubing was connected to a peristaltic pump which in turn was connected to the on-line filter cartridge and then to the 2000 L storage container. Total length of the tubing was about 25 m. The first 50-60 L of the collected seawater were discarded. The seawater was collected directly in the tank. About 2000 L of seawater were thus sampled which took 7 h to complete. [Pg.368]

The seawater was passed in-line over a 0.45 pm membrane filter cartridge placed after the peristaltic pump. After each filter change the first 20-30 L of seawater were discarded to allow for cleaning of the filter. Changing of filters was performed inside a clean bench.
