In 1973 the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Institute (SEMI) held its first standards meeting. SEMI standards are voluntary consensus specifications developed by the producers, users, and general interest groups in the semiconductor (qv) industry. Key actors within the pharmaceutical sector—government and private and public interest groups— are usually the main influences on dmg regulation. The political, social and economic stmctures of the country generally determine the level of influence of these players. 

In Cypms and Malaysia, many types of interest groups are found in the pharmaceutical sector. Nonetheless, the DRA appears to be much more dominant, compared with other groups involved in the sector. The Cypriot Pharmaceutical Services Division enjoys significant authority vis-a-vis the industry and pharmacies. Consumer and industrial groups are not well organized. In the past, consumer groups have occasionally made themselves heard and attempted to put pressure on the DRA to accord priority status to certain dmgs. 

Almost all these mechanisms for accountability are limited to organizational instmments, namely publicity (through websites, reports, gazettes, radio) citizen participation (inclusion of interest groups on the committees) and internal discipline (transparent SOPs). A comprehensive listing of all the vendors that offer HTS instrumentation and platforms is beyond the scope of this chapter, but most vendors maintain informative websites and there are three professional organizations that disseminate useful information about automation platforms for HTS on the world wide web, the Society for Biomolecular Sciences (www.sbsonline.com), the Association for Laboratory Automation (www.labautomation.org), and the Laboratory Robotics Interest Group (www.lab-robotics.org). Stimulate Voluntary Control. As previously indicated, voluntary control is the desired method for regulating problems which have their roots in industry. It is desired that this approach be undertaken and its many possibilities exhausted before resort is made to other measures. Sincere efforts in this direction will win the cooperation and support of all other interested groups. The committee will aid and encourage this approach by bringing health problems to industry s attention and will suggest possible ways for their correction. 

Preliminary work on several of these projects has already been in progress for over a year. These initial efforts will be expanded and intensified when the committee on pesticides becomes activated in the near future. However, pursuance of this program will require the support and cooperation of all segments of science and industry. Advisory bodies from the various interested groups will be called upon for recommendations and suggestions on problems which fall within their field. In turn, the assistance of this committee will be available, not only to the medical profession, but to all other groups in any direction in which the committee may be useful.
