Preference should be given to the membrane process due to its less polluting characteristics over other technologies. In addition, the scrubbing of chlorine from tail gases to produce hypochlorite is highly recommended. 

The pollutants characteristic of the industry wastewaters are summarized in Table 5.4 through Table 5.11, for both classical and toxic pollutants. The toxic pollutant data have been developed using a verification protocol established by U.S. EPA, with the exception of the following selenium, silver, thallium, and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCCD). Table 5.12 presents the minimum detection limit for the toxic pollutants. Any value below the minimum limit is listed in the summary tables as below detection limit (BDL). 

Necrotic areas may appear on an otherwise normal appearing leaf, or they may be accompanied by varying degrees of yellow discoloration (chlorosis). Chlorosis may form a transition zone between completely dead and the healthy areas, or it may cover any portion of the living tissue. Chlorosis often develops in tissues which have accumulated an excessive but nonlethal amount of a particular toxicant. Various patterns and degrees of chlorosis occur when chlorophyll is attacked by the toxic pollutants. Characteristics of the chlorotic pattern are influenced by the sensitivity of plants exposed, type of pollutant, dosage received, and environmental conditions under which the plant is grown. 

Selection of the most appropriate control device requires consideration of the pollutant being handled and the features of the control device. Often, poor system performance can be attributed to the selection of a control device that is not suited to the -pollutant characteristics. An understanding of the equipment operating principles will enable the design engineer to avoid this problem.

Ozone is a specific atmospheric pollutant characteristic of urban and some industrial areas of the troposphere. Its concentration is very variable. Because of both the photochemical character of the origin of ozone and its high reactivity with organic atmospheric pollutants as well as some organic materials on the Earth s surface, its night concentration drops to zero. There is significant interest in the use of natural dyes to reduce the environmental impact of dyeing processes. These are not in widespread use and suffer from several disadvantages. The shade range that can be produced with natural dyes is very limited. They are useful primarily for natural, not synthetic, fibers. The fastness, especially to light, of many natural dyes is inferior. The cost in many cases is high. The pollutant characteristics of natural dyes are not well known. Many traditional natural dyes required mordants (copper or iron) for application to natmal fibers. In many cases, the dye affinity is low. Nevertheless, these represent a significant possibility for improvement and are under study at this time.
