Preliminary Evaluation

At first sight, adsorption and reaction are well-matched functionalities for integrated chemical processes. Their compatibility extends over a wide temperature range, and their respective kinetics are usually rapid enough so as not to constrain either process, whereas the permeation rate in membrane reactors commonly lags behind that of the catalytic reaction [9]. The phase slippage observed in extractive processes [10], for example, is absent and the choice of the adsorbent offers a powerful degree of freedom in the selective manipulation of concentration profiles that lies at the heart of all multifunctional reactor operation [11]. Furthermore, in contrast to reactive distillation, the effective independence of concentration and temperature profiles [Pg.205]

The initial biogas recovered is an MHV gas and is often upgraded to high heat value (HHV) gas when used for blending with natural gas suppHes. The aimual production of HHV gas ia 1987, produced by 11 HHV gasification facihties, was 116 x 10 m of pipehne-quaUty gas, ie, 0.004 EJ (121). This is an iacrease from the 1980 production of 11.3 X 10 m . Another 38 landfill gas recovery plants produced an estimated 218 x 10 m of MHV gas, ie, 0.005 EJ. Additions to production can be expected because of landfill recovery sites that have been identified as suitable for methane recovery. In 1988, there were 51 sites ia preliminary evaluation and 42 sites were proposed as potential sites (121). [Pg.42]

A process engineer s task is often to evaluate the performance of a compressor unit based on gas throughputs and terminal pressures. Since compressor stations are complex machines and operations, the analysis required is sophisticated and goes well beyond simple computations on a personal computer, although some preliminary evaluations can certainly be made. In this section we summarize the working expressions for standard compressor operations. Compressor operations can be categorized under three thermodynamic categories ... [Pg.520]

In general, stabilizers function by reaction with proplnt decompn products. A number of methods have been described and a preliminary evaluation of these methods was conducted by several labs under a cooperative program. Based on results from these screening tests, the PicArsn spec tropho tome trie methods for available stabilizer and primary degradation products were selected for further study. The initial phase of this program was an attempt to standardize the necessary spectrophotometric factors. Significant differences with regard to the factors obtained... [Pg.944]

In conclusion, the following experiments on filtration-washing-deliquoring should be performed to produce data (viscosity of liquids, effective solid concentration, specific cake resistance, cake compressibility, etc.) that are necessary to evaluate times of individual steps of filtration at an industrial scale, i.e. to obtain the proper basis for scale-up of filtration processes measure the filtrate volume versus time make marks on your vacuum flask and take down the time when the filtrate level reaches the mark => no more experiments are needed for preliminary evaluations of filtration properties of slurries initially fines pass the filter medium => recirculate them to the slurry,... [Pg.248]

After preliminary evaluation of the discovery route (scheme 1), we concluded that the overall yield of RWJ-26240 should be improved and that the use of NaCNBH. should be eliminated, since it produces a waste stream containing HCN or NaCN. Replacement of the expensive silver reagent, silver acetate, would permit significant cost reduction. The copper-catalyzed palladium coupling step would lead to palladium as a contaminant in the final product.177 Since a drug substance containing palladium would not be acceptable, this step would also have to be revised. [Pg.174]

Determination of the IC50 is a preliminary evaluation of the relative affinity of different compounds for a target enzyme. To evaluate affinity properly, however, one must first define the mechanism of inhibition of the target enzyme by each compound. The next step in the lead evaluation flowchart (Figure 5.1) is to determine if the inhibition caused by a compound is rapidly reversible, slowly reversible, or irreversible. This information will help the investigator understand whether or not the inhibition reaction can be treated as a reversible equilibrium, and thus decide on the best measure of true affinity for a particular compound. [Pg.125]

Distribution of organic chemicals among environmental compartments can be defined in terms of simple equilibrium expressions. Partition coefficients between water and air, water and soil, and water and biota can be combined to construct model environments which can provide a framework for preliminary evaluation of expected environmental behavior. This approach is particularly useful when little data is available since partition coefficients can be estimated with reasonable accuracy from correlations between properties. In addition to identifying those environmental compartments in which a chemical is likely to reside, which can aid in directing future research, these types of models can provide a base for more elaborate kinetic models. [Pg.105]

Mr. Don Clay, Director of the Office of Toxic Substances, discussed the premanufacture review procedures and experience with PMNs to date at a meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation on Development (OECD) Chemicals Forum in December, (10). He noted that EPA s chemistry, toxicology, and exposure assessment teams normally complete their preliminary evaluation within a week of receipt of a PMN, and, that preliminary assessment eliminates about 50 percent of the substances as chemicals of low concern. They then proceed to structure activity analysis and reasonable worst case assumptions to assess unreasonable risk or the need for more data. [Pg.32]

Both the substitution and Ullmann reactions provide sources of oligomers, making the final product a mixture of monomeric and oligomeric Bpecies. While this was desirable for the overall objective of the work, increasing chain length between crosslink sites, the presence of oligomers did complicate characterization of the products obtained from the various reactions. For this reason, a reaction scheme which would give a pure monomeric product was formulated and used for all of the diol systems to do preliminary evaluations. [Pg.33]
