There are a few basic numerical and experimental tools with which you must be familiar. Fundamental measurements in analytical chemistry, such as mass and volume, use base SI units, such as the kilogram (kg) and the liter (L). Other units, such as power, are defined in terms of these base units. When reporting measurements, we must be careful to include only those digits that are significant and to maintain the uncertainty implied by these significant figures when transforming measurements into results. [Pg.33]

This international prototype, adopted by the 1st and 3rd CGPM in 1889 and 1901, is a particular cylinder of platinum—iridium kept at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures near Paris. It is the only base unit still defined by an artifact. [Pg.308]

Compound Units. It is usually recommended that only one prefix be used in forming a multiple of a compound unit, and that it should be attached to the numerator. For the same production capacity, the oxygen-based process requires fewer reactors, all of which operate in parallel and are exposed to reaction gas of the same composition. However, the use of purge reactors in series for an air-based process in conjunction with the associated energy recovery system increases the overall complexity of the unit. The catalyst should be the copper-based United Catalyst T-2370 in 3/16 , reduced and stabilized, in extrudate form. Initially, 26.5 g of this should be charged to the catalyst basket. This catalyst is not for methanol synthesis but for the low temperature shift reaction of converting CO to CO2 with steam. Units may be combined together into derived units to express a property more complicated than mass, length, or time. For example, volume, V, the amount of space occupied by a substance, is the product of three lengths therefore, the derived unit of volume is (meter)3, denoted m3.
