Polyvinyl adsorption

Direct measurements on metals such as iron, nickel and stainless steel have shown that adsorption occurs from acid solutions of inhibitors such as iodide ions, carbon monoxide and organic compounds such as amines , thioureas , sulphoxides , sulphidesand mer-captans. These studies have shown that the efficiency of inhibition (expressed as the relative reduction in corrosion rate) can be qualitatively related to the amount of adsorbed inhibitor on the metal surface. However, no detailed quantitative correlation has yet been achieved between these parameters. There is some evidence that adsorption of inhibitor species at low surface coverage d (for complete surface coverage 0=1) may be more effective in producing inhibition than adsorption at high surface coverage. In particular, the adsorption of polyvinyl pyridine on iron in hydrochloric acid at 0 < 0 -1 monolayer has been found to produce an 80% reduction in corrosion rate . [Pg.807]

Polymer adsorption is important in the flocculation and stabilization of colloidal sols and has been reviewed by Vincent et al. (1) and Tadros (2). Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been used in these studies because of its practical application in textiles, adhesives, and coatings. The determination of adsorption isotherms at liquid-solid interfaces involves a mass balance on the amount of polymer added to the dispersion, which requires the separation of the liquid phase from the particle phase. Centrifugation is often used for this separation, under the assumption that the adsorption-desorption equilibrium does not change during this process. Serum replacement (6) allows the separation of the liquid phase without assumptions as to the configuration of the adsorbed polymer molecules. This method has been used to determine the adsorption isotherms of anionic and nonionic emulsifiers on various types of latex particles (7,8). Traditionally, ultrafilters have been manufactured from cellulose acetate or cellulose nitrate. Recent investigations have shown that the behavior and interactions of surfactants in a polyvinyl acetate latex are quite different and complex compared to that in a polystyrene latex (1, 2). Surfactant adsorption at the fairly polar vinyl acetate latex surface is generally weak (3,4) and at times shows a complex adsorption isotherm (2). It is well known (3,5,6) that sodium lauryl sulfate interacts with some polymers such as polyvinyl acetate causing solubilization of the insoluble polymer leading to an increase in viscosity. In Figure 3, viscosity of the homopolymer and 70/30 VA/BA at various NaLS/polymer ratio is shown. It is seen that the viscosity of the 2% latex dispersion increases with increase in NaLS/polymer ratio. Similar visoosity data for the 85/15 VA/BA was intermediate between the homopolymer and 70/30 VA/BA latexes. The most popular thin layer is silica gel, and it is estimated that about 90% of TLC separations are performed on standard TLC silica plates a common size is 20 cm square and 250 g,m thick. Binders, in amounts up to 15%, are usually used to produce a stable layer and good adherence to the backing plate, but plates can be made without binders. Calcium sulfate (gypsum, designated with a G in the name, e.g., silica gel G) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are most common. The PVA plates are very stable and will withstand rather rough handling. While it is not difficult to make one s own plates, most laboratories prefer commercially prepared plates, especially those made with PVA.
