In general, the comparison of spectra of films with different thickness is problematic due to optical influences on the resulting spectra [15]. Fortunately, simulation of thin-film spectra with constant bulk-like properties proves that U p values vary by less than 3% for the thickness range studied, due to the changed optical situation [16]. Therefore, a direct quantitative comparison is possible within the limits of this small systematic error. In addition, the comparison between simulated bulk-like spectra and measured thin-film spectra is suited to revealing characteristic influences of the substrate and the interphase. [Pg.448]

Band intensities still depend not only on the concentration but also on the extinction coefficient of the eigenvibration considered. The extinction coefficient is difficult to determine and it varies with the chemical environment. As a result, Upp is a quantitative measure for the chemical conversion, but the two quantities are not identical. [Pg.448]

Even the 650 nm layers do not reach the epoxy conversion in the bulk, which is almost 100% after post-curing [18]. Hence, this substrate-induced inhibition of the curing reaction extends over several hundred nanometers. On Cu, U p is slightly increased in comparison with Al and Au, which show comparable Lfjp [Pg.449]

Note that the curves shift for the two sets of samples prepared on two different days. This indicates the limits of sample reproducibility due to ambient temperature fluctuations that affected the kinetics and final epoxy conversion. Therefore, different preparation series, and hence aging regimes, may be compared only qualitatively. In future work, curing conditions will have to be controlled even more precisely. [Pg.449]

In dry Ar (Fig. 28.2 a), Upp(t gg) is similar on Al and Au but different on Cu. Under dry conditions on Al and Au, the residual oxirane is consumed completely within 49 days in thin layers, while only a small change is observed in the 650 nm films over the full 100 days of the experiment. This influence of dpp could indicate a smaller size of heterogeneities and an increased polymer mobility near the substrate that would facilitate diffusion during aging. On Cu in dry Ar, the kinetics of oxirane consumption tend to be slower in all films and the final Upp(tage) falls behind the values on Al and Au. These findings can be related to Cu ions detected by XPS and TOF-SIMS in these films [19]. Notable [Pg.449]


Liquid Fabric Softeners. The principal functions of fabric softeners are to minimize the problem of static electricity and to keep fabrics soft (see Antistatic agents). In these laundry additives, the fragrance must reinforce the sense of softness that is the desired result of their use. Most fabric softeners have a pH of about 3.5, which limits the materials that can be used in the fragrances. For example, acetals cannot be used because they break down and cause malodor problems in addition, there is the likelihood of discoloration from Schiff bases, oakmoss extracts, and some specialty chemicals. Testing of fragrance materials in product bases should take place under accelerated aging conditions (eg, 40°C in plastic bottles) to check for odor stabiUty and discoloration. [Pg.75]

Wire cords are particularly subject to degradation of their adhesion values by moisture. To combat this, halogenated butyl (HIIR) is used in tire innerliners because of its property of low air and water vapor diffusion rates. Moisture is present in most air pumps and many tires are mounted with water left in the tire on mounting. For these reasons tires and tire compounds are tested extensively at simulated aging conditions in the laboratory and on test vehicles before they are sold to the customer. [Pg.252]

Mechanical Properties. An advantage of the two corrosion-resistant alloys is that they may be strengthened considerably by cold working. MP35N alloy is iatended for use ia the work-hardened or work-hardened and aged condition, and the manufacturers have suppHed considerable data concerning the mechanical properties of the alloy at different levels of cold work. Antioxidants. Antioxidants are rarely needed because of the highly saturated nature of the polymer chains. If protection against severe environmental ageing conditions is needed, typical antioxidants (Ethanox 702, Irganox 1010) can be added. In some cases, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate (0.05-0.2 wt%) or butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) can be used as stabilizers. [Pg.652]

This method has also been successfully applied in the synthesis of Cu(II)-containing LDHs, although well crystallized materials are difficult to prepare as a consequence of the Jahn-Teller distortion found in the coordination shell of Cu(II) [70,71]. Incorporation of Ni(II) in the layers was found to improve the crystallinity and structural stability of such LDHs. For the synthesis of Cu/Ni/Al - CO3 and Cu/Ni/Mg/Al - CO3 LDHs [70] by the method with separate nucleation and aging steps, LDHs with both smaller particle size and narrower distribution of particle size were obtained compared with those prepared using a conventional coprecipitation method, similar to the case for Mg/Al-C03 LDHs [20]. Well crystallized Cu/Ni/Cr-COs LDHs [71] were obtained when the Cu/Ni/Cr atom ratio ranged from 1 2 1 to 1 3 1 in the reaction mixture with hydrothermal aging conditions at 180 °C for 4 h. [Pg.100]
