Granulocyte colony-stimulating factors ,

G-CSF is also known as pluripoietin and CSI -fl. Two slight variants are known, one consisting of 174 amino acids and the other of 177. The smaller polypeptide predominates and also displays significantly greater biological activity than the larger variant. [Pg.269]

The G-CSF receptor has been well characterized. It is a single transmembrane polypeptide found on the surface of neutrophils, as well as in various haemopoietic precursor cells, platelets, endothelial cells and, notably, various myeloid leukaemias. (Myeloid means derived from bone marrow leukaemia refers to a cancerous condition in which there is uncontrolled overproduction of white blood cells in the bone marrow or other blood-forming organs. The white cells produced are generally immature/abnormal and result in the suppression of production of healthy white blood cells.) [Pg.269]

Neutropenia associated with interferon or pegylated interferon therapy is defined as an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of less than 1000 cells/mm3 in rare cases, an ANC less than 500 cells/mm3 maybe observed. The neutropenia is more common and in some cases more severe with pegylated interferon than with unmodified interferon. Neutropenia usually occurs within the first 2 weeks after initiating either formulation of interferon, with the WBC count stabilizing by week four or six. The neutropenia is reversible upon discontinuing therapy. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor has been used as an adjunctive therapy for interferon-induced neutropenia in hepatitis patients.44... [Pg.356]
