Coalescing agents are, in reality, temporary plasticizers, which promote the coalescence by increasing the amount of plastic flow in latex paints. As described above, plasticizers were main components in all gas chromatograms of the semi-polar and polar fractions obtained from the sediment samples. Examples include phthalates, tributyl phosphate and in addition a technical mixture of alkylsulfonic acid phenylesters. Tributyl phosphate is used as a plasticizer for cellulose esters, vinyl resins, and lacquers and in making fire retardants, biocides, defoamers, and catalysts. 

Relatively Httle is known about industrial organophosphates, such as triphenyl phosphate, trioctyl phosphate, and tris(chloropropyl) phosphate. These compounds are used as plasticizers and flame retardants and are likely to reach the marine environment. Six organophosphates were detected in the water of Osaka Bay in concentrations ranging from 0.1 pg/1 to 1.3 pg/1. The compounds tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate and tributyl phosphate were the most abundant [144].

If the temperature rises above another incompatibihty area may appear. Such an area has been observed in some polymer-solvent systems, which are characterized by a low critical solution temperature, LCST, T2c- In Figure 6.1, LCST is higher n UCST. The negative dependence of polymer-plasticizer compatibility on temperature suggests the theoretical probability that LCST also occurs in polymer-plasticizer systems such as PVC with either dii-sodecyl adipate, dibutyl phthalate, or tributyl phosphate. 

We used SPU synthesized on the base of prepolymer of tetrametlylene oxide diol (molecular mass M=1300) obtained by interaction of appropriate diol (M=1000) with a double excess of 2,4-toluilene diisocyanate. Tributyl phosphate (TBP) n. (C4H90)3P0. A colorless liquid used as a primary plasticizer and solvent for cellulose acetate, chlorinated rubber and, in special applications, for vinyl resins. Its relatively high volatility limits its use as a plasticizer for vinyls. 

On the other hand, GC, because of the physical separation it effects, furnishes both a qualitative and a quantitative analysis of polymer-plasticiser mixtures with almost the same ease as the analysis of plasticisers alone, and this is discussed further in Chapter 5.1. It suffices to submit the sample, prepared as for the pyrolysis of plastics, to a controlled pyrolysis in order to disengage the vaporised plasticisers. The polymer is partially degraded, but its pyrolysis products were in all the cases studied by Guiochon and Hennicker [82] much lighter than the plasticisers and in no way prevented their separation and identification. Figure 4.18 shows the separation obtained of four plasticisers (a) dibutyl succinate, (b) tributyl phosphate, (c) dimethyl sebacate and (d) diethyl phthalate and the pyrolysis products of polyvinyl chloride. The latter are eluted during the first minute of operation.
