Petroleum diesel

Biodiesel is diesel fuel produced from vegetable oils and other renewable resources. Many different types of oils can he used, including animal fats, used cooking oils, and soybean oil. Biodiesel is miscible with petroleum diesels and can he used in biodiesel-diesel blends. Most often blends are 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent traditional diesel. Soy diesel can be used neat (100%), hut many other types of biodiesel are too viscous, especially in winter, and must be used in blends to remain fluid. The properties of the fuel will vaiy depending on the raw material used. Typical values for biodiesel are shown in Table 1. [Pg.162]

Biodiesel does not present any special safety concerns. Pure biodiesel or biodiesel and petroleum diesel blends have a higher flash point than conventional diesel, making them safer to store and handle. Problems can occur with biodiesels in cold weather due to their high viscosity. Biodiesel has a higher degree of unsaturation in the fuel, which can make it vulnerable to oxidation during storage. [Pg.162]

The carbon footprint of transport fuels has been analyzed in several studies starting from 1990. One of the most important is the study realized by Sheehan et al. [13] at National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the United States.This is an LCA study that includes the impact of C02 emissions. Most important operations belonging to the petroleum diesel product system include crude oil extraction, its transport to an oil refinery, crude oil refining to diesel fuel, its transportation to the user, and its use in a bus engine. [Pg.287]

Vegetable oils have the potential to substitute a fraction of petroleum distillates and petroleum-based petrochemicals in the near future. Possible acceptable converting processes of vegetable oils into reusable products are transesterification, solvent extraction, cracking and pyrolysis. Pyrolysis has received a significant amount of interest as this gives products of better quality compared to any other thermochemical process. No increase in the incidence of tumor-bearing mice was noted in animals treated with 25 mg of undiluted petroleum diesel three times per week for up to 105 weeks in male and female C3H/HeN (diesel-treated had an incidence of 2/27 and mineral oil-treated negative controls did not develop any tumors). Jet A did, however, produce an increased incidence (26%) of tumors (primarily squamous cell carcinoma and fibrosarcoma) (Clark et al. 1988). Biodiesel is a olean burning alternative fuel produced from domestic, renewable resources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to oreate a biodiesel blend. In the studies carried out to date, eight fuels have been tested which include six synfuels and two petroleum derived fuels. The synfuels tested included SRC-II middle and heavy distillate fuels, a blend of these fuels, and one SRC fuel blended with the process donor solvent. Some of the renewable resources for the production of green energy are vegetable oils and animal fats. The use of neat lipids as transportation fuel has not been very successful due to their high viscosity which is leading to engine problems. The attraction of biodiesel is reduced discharge of undesirable combustion emission compounds into the air. Undoubtedly, effectiveness is related to the degree of petrochemicals replacement. Biodiesel is sold with a numerical designation of the oil/fat-ester content. B20 is a frequent blend, containing 80 percent petroleum diesel fuel and 20 percent FAME. A major farm equipment manufacturer has announced it will ship its new equipment with B2 in the fuel tanks.
