Modern methods of amino-acid and peptide analysis, have enabled the complete amino-acid sequence of a number of proteins to be worked out. The grosser structure can be determined by X-ray diffraction procedures. Proteins have molecular weights ranging from about 6 000 000 to 5 000 (although the dividing line between a protein and a peptide is ill defined). The octane number requirement (ONR) of a car is the octane number which causes barely audible, ie, trace knock when driven by a trained rater. The Coordinating Research Council (CRC), a research organi2ation funded joindy by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA), has defined test procedures for measuring ONR. Each car is driven under a set of light and heavy accelerations until the most sensitive driving mode is determined. Then a series of fuels is mn in the car until trace knock is determined. Large quantities of butane are shipped under contract standards rather than under national or worldwide specifications. Most of the petrochemical feedstock materials are sold at purity specifications of 95—99.5 mol %. Butane and butane—petroleum mixtures intended for fuel use are sold worldwide under specifications defined by the Gas Processors Association, and the specifications and test methods have been pubHshed (28). High density polyethylene (HDPE) is defined by ASTM D1248-84 as a product of ethylene polymerisation with a density of 0.940 g/cm or higher. This range includes both homopolymers of ethylene and its copolymers with small amounts of a-olefins. The first commercial processes for HDPE manufacture were developed in the early 1950s and utilised a variety of transition-metal polymerisation catalysts based on molybdenum (1), chromium (2,3), and titanium (4). A number of other words that have traditionally been used in the petroleum industry are difficult to define precisely. These refer pardy to specific hoiling ranges, but also to certain intended uses. Other methods are also available for the estimation of diesel fuel quaUty. For example, the diesel index (DI) is defined by the relation DI = (A° F X ° API)/100, where A °F is the aniline point in degrees Fahrenheit and °API is the American Petroleum Institute gravity. In the fire codes, the atmospheric boiling point is an important physical property used to classify the degree of hazardousness of a Hquid. If a mixture of Hquids is heated, it starts to bod at some temperature but continues to rise ia temperature over a boiling temperature range. Because the mixture does not have a definite boiling poiat, the NFPA fire codes define a comparable value of boiling poiat for the purposes of classifying Hquids. For petroleum mixture, it is based on the 10% poiat of a distillation performed ia accordance with ASTM D86, Standard Method of Test for Distillation of Petroleum Products. [Pg.310]

Asphalt [8052-42-4] is defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (1) as a dark brown to black cementitious material in which the predominating constituents are bitumens that occur in nature or are obtained in petroleum processing. The term tar sands is a misnomer tar is a product of coal processing. Oil sands is also a misnomer but equivalent to usage of "oil shale." Bituminous sands is more correct bitumen is a naturally occurring asphalt. Asphalt is a product of a refinery operation, usually made from a residuum. Residuum is the nonvolatile portion of petroleum and often further defined as atmospheric (bp > 350° C) or vacuum (bp > 565° C). For convenience, the terms "asphalt" and "bitumen" will be used interchangeably in this article. [Pg.359]

For many years the petroleum industry has defined nonconductive liquids as having conductivities less than 50 pS/m. A higher value of 100 pS/m is used here to address the higher dielectric constants of certain flammable chemicals in relation to petroleum products. The first step in a gas processing plant is to separate the components that are to be recovered from the gas into an NGL stream. It may then be desirable to fractionate the NGL stream into various liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) components of ethane, propane, iso-butane, or normal-butane. The unfractionated natural gas liquids product (NGL) is defined by the properties in Table 9-2. Camphene forms a well-defined nitrite, and a nitroso-nitrite, when treated in the following manner A well-cooled solution of camphene in petroleum ether is mixed with a saturated solution of sodium nitrite, and dilute acetic acid is added. The mixture is well stirred, being kept cool all the time. Camphene nitrosonitrite, CuHi NjOj, separates and on recrystallisation forms crystals which decompose at about 149°. The petroleum ether solution, which has been filtered off from this compound, is shaken with a concentrated solution of pK)tassium hydroxide, which removes camphene nitrosite, CjQHigNjOj, in the form of its potassium salt. When this is decomposed with acids it yields the free nitrosite. This compound is a greenish oil, with a pleasant odour, easily decomposing when heated to 50°. [Pg.52]

For the identification of citronellal, the semi-carbazone is the easiest cry stalline compound to prepare. It results if an alcoholic solution of citronellal be well-shaken with a solution of semi-carbazide hydrochloride and acetate of sodium. It is purified by recrystallisation from a mixture of chloroform and petroleum ether, and then melts at 84°. It also forms a well-defined naphthocinchoninic acid, which is prepared in the same manner as the corresponding citral compound. It melts at 225°. [Pg.188]
