Polychlorinated Pesticides. A once substantial but now diminished use for DCPD is in the preparation of chlorinated derivatives for further use or synthesis into pesticide compounds (see Insectcontrol technology). Soil permanence and solubiUty of the products in human fatty tissues have considerably restricted the use of these compounds. The more prominent chlorinated pesticides were aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane, and heptachlor, all of which use hexachorocyclopentadiene as a starting material. Aldrin and dieldrin are no longer used in the U.S. Chlordane and heptachlor are stiU produced, but only for export use. [Pg.434]

Very little recent information on concentrations of endrin in water could be found in the available literature. Unlike DDT, chlordane, aldrin/dieldrin, and a variety of other chlorinated pesticides, endrin was never used extensively in urban areas. This is reflected in the results from EPA s Nationwide Urban Runoff Program, which showed no detections in 86 high-flow water samples from 51 urbanized watersheds from 19 cities (Cole et al. 1984). Analysis of EPA STORET monitoring information from ambient surface water showed a significant percentage of detections for endrin (32% of 8,789 samples), but most were near the detection limits, with a national median concentration of 0.001 ppb (Staples et al. 1985). The American Public Health Association [97,98] published an early gas chromatographic method for the solvent extraction and gas chromatographic determination of 11 chlorinated insecticides in water samples in amounts, down to 0.005mg L 1 p,p -DT)E, p,p -DDT, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endrin, Heptachlor, Heptachlor epoxide, Lindane, Isodrin and Methoxychlor. Cyclodienes are an important group of chlorinated pesticides. The group hep-tachlor includes insecticides such as chlordane, aldrin, dieldrin, endosulfan, and heptachlor and its epoxide. These are used for the control of a variety of plant pests in agriculture and household environments. The entry of cyclodienes to the global market has created easy management for the control of crop pests. Tissues such as fat, blood or liver can be examined for residues of the more stable chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides. Chlorinated Pesticides. The major metabolic degradation pathways for toxaphene in all organisms are probably reductive dechlorination and reductive dehydrochlorination. In some cases, oxidative dechlorination has been observed to result in hydroxy derivatives, acids and ketones.76 Aldrin is transformed into dieldrin in biotic as well as abiotic transformation processes. [Pg.106]

As an example of differences in soil residue persistence between the organophosphates and chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides, parathion and malathion residues were present at the 0.1 p.p.m. level within 8 days of application whereas aldrin [according to Lichtenstein (23)] when applied at the same concentration, persisted 5 months longer as did aldrin and dieldrin at 40% of the applied dosage. Decker et al. (12) report that aldrin and dieldrin residues in soils never exceeded 13.2% of the total applied when tested one year after the last application. Pesticide residues are the most common agricultural chemicals that contaminate oils and they are almost inevitable. Although edible oils are secondary products derived from the processing of crops, there will be some carryover of pesticide residues into the oil. A variety of methods has been devised for the confirmation of heptachlor residues (Table II). The presence in the heptachlor molecule (Figure 1) of a reactive allylic chlorine atom has been the basis of three confirmatory tests based on its ease of replacement. Reaction with a silver acetate-glacial acetic acid mixture produced 1-acetoxychlordene which, with the GLC conditions used, had a retention time close to heptachlor epoxide 44). Of the common organochlorine pesticides, only heptachlor reacted quantitatively. Endrin reacts to a small extent with the glacial acetic acid to give a secondary endrin ketone peak. When the reaction of heptachlor with silver salts was extended to silver carbonate in aqueous alcohol, 1-hydroxychlordene was obtained which can easily be converted to the more volatile and GG-responsive silyl ether. DDT is not the only chlorinated hydrocarbon used as a pesticide. Other compounds in this class include dieldrin, aldrin, heptachlor, and chlordan. The use of these compounds has also been banned or restricted in the United States. The U.S. government has decided the harm they cause to the environment is more important than the benefits they provide to farmers and other users. [Pg.132]

Researchers were also able to establish the link between declines of other predatory species such as the European sparrowhawk and the use of organo-chlorine pesticides other than DDT. For instance, the cyclodiene insecticides aldrin, dieldrin, and he-ptachlor used as seed treatments caused massive mortality of both seed-eating species and their predators. All of the insecticides had the following points in common they were highly soluble in fats and refractory to metabolism. The impacts on the predatory species typically take place in periods of food stress when fat soluble residues are released from fat stores and returned into general circulation. In a food-stressed individual, the brain remains as the most lipid rich tissue and this is where contaminants move to. Toxicity results when threshold values in brain tissue are exceeded. At sublethal levels, documented effects of cyclodiene insecticides in birds have included changes in their reproductive, social, and avoidance behaviors. [Pg.933]

A large number of ubiquitous environmental pollutants are very toxic to the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis when administered at high (greater than environmental) levels. To study low level effects on the HPT axis, laboratory animals were administered a mixture of 16 organochlorine pesticides and other chlorinated hydrocarbons and heavy metals, all at levels similar to those found environmentally, so as to simulate environmental exposure. The chemicals included DDT (6.91), HCB (5.73), TCDD (6.80), PCBs (6.29), methoxychlor (5.08), endosulfan (3.83), heptachlor (6.10), hexachlorocyclohexane (3.80), dieldrin (5.40), aldrin (6.50), mirex (7.18), several chlorinated benzenes (2.84-3.44), cadmium (-1.65), and lead (1.35). Of the several classes of synthetic insecticides, the chlorinated hydrocarbon (CH) and organophosphate (OP) insecticides have the greatest psychiatric significance [Pesticides and Neurological Diseases 1982 Ecobichon 1996). The CH insecticides, also called organochlorine insecticides, include three chemical classes di-chlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), cyclodienes (aldrin, dieldrin, heptachlor, chlordane, endosulfan), and chlorinated benzene and cyclohexanes (lindane) (Ecobichon 1996). Their ban in the United States and Europe resulted from their high chemical stability and lipid solubility that allowed environmental persistence and magnification in the food chain (Ecobichon 1996 Kaloyanova and El Batawi 1991). [Pg.69]

A close examination of this usage table shows that the herbicide atrazine has held the number one spot for the last 20 years. This compound is often used in nonfood crops such as cotton. However, some compounds are notably absent from the 1993 tabulation, including toxaphene, methyl-parathion, car-baryl, propachlor, DSMA, linuron, aldrin, carbofuran, chloramben, maneb, sodium chlorate, propanil, DBCP, malathion, dinoseb, and chlordane. It should also be noted that DDT, the pesticide on which Silent Spring was focused and which continues to be used as the example of man s folly with chemicals, is not on either list. The one generalization that can be made concerning this fist of deletions is that most of these pesticides are more persistent than the compounds that replaced them and a significant number of them are chlorinated hydrocarbons. It is important to keep these compounds in mind since popular press accounts of pesticide contamination often quote incidences of exposure to unnamed pesticides and then focus most discussion... [Pg.49]
