Much of the equipment used in the recovery system is identical with or closely related to equipment used in other chemical industries. This includes multiple-effect evaporators, and forced-circulation concentrators, causticizing equipment, and lime kiln. The function and nature of equipment essentially unique to the kraft recovery system are discussed herein. [Pg.268]

Examples of Synthesis Routes Inherently Safer Than Others As summarized by Bodor (1995), the ethyl ester of DDT is highly effective as a pesticide and is not as toxic. The ester is hydrolytically sensitive and metabolizes to nontoxic products. The deliberate introduction of a structure into the molecule which facilitates hydrolytic deactivation of the molecule to a safer form can be a key to creating a chemical product with the desired pesticide effects but without the undesired environmental effects. This technique is being used extensively in the pharmaceutical industry. It is applicable to other chemical industries as well. [Pg.65]

E.H. Hurst s overview introduced several themes pursued by other chemical industry speakers. The Dow Chemical Company s E.H. Blair analyzed the problem of setting priorities for testing the 55,000 existing chemicals listed in the TSCA inventory for their effects on health and the environment. Resources for such testing are not unlimited. A systematic classification was made of these substances by production volume. The 9.5% of these substances which account for 99.9% of reported production were divided further into categories such as organic, inorganic, and polymeric. [Pg.227]

Polymeric materials, along with several other chemical industrial products, contribute positively to the balance of trade (Table 1.12). In fact, plastics and resins show the greatest value increase of exports minus imports with over 12 billion net favoring exports. The polymer-intense materials numbers are higher than noted in Table 1.12 since fiber and rubber materials are absent as a separate entry. Even so, the figures demonstrate the positive role polymers play in our balance of trade situation. [Pg.753]

During the beginning of the nineteenth century, the alkali and acid industries provided the model for other chemical industries. One characteristic of the chemical industry is that development in one area often stimulates development in another area. For example, the lead-chamber method produced enough sulfuric acid to make the acid practical for use in the LeBlanc process. Similarly, the Solvay process used ammonia produced when coke was made for steel production. Certain chemical industries were perceived by royalty and national leaders as critical to their nation s welfare. One of these was the manufacture of gunpowder, also known as blackpowder. Gunpowder is a mixture of approximately... [Pg.292]

The content of Hg in fish, contributing substantially to the dietary intake of this element, is present at a stable concentration level in comparison with the third monitoring period. Using plaice and cod as marker foods, the concentration of Hg in these fish species remains stable over the four monitoring periods. In geographically localized areas of the Danish seas, Hg emissions from chlorine-alkali and other chemical industries earlier led to an extremely elevated content of this element in marine biota including fish, particularly in the Sound [6], These emission sources have been discontinued and for over a decade the Hg content in locally caught fish has decreased [7],... [Pg.304]

Owing to great similarities in chemical properties and their association together in Natme, the second and third triads of groups 8-10 of the periodic table (Ru, Rh, Pd and Os, Ir, Pt) present many difficulties for the analyst. Their comparative rarity and intrinsic value demand their recovery from spent catalytic converters in the petroleum and many other chemical industries, from the increasing number of pollution control units in motor vehicles, from scrapped jewellery and the scrap of the electronics industry, as well as material from geochemical exploration, the exploitation from mineral deposits, and sweeps . The first requirement is to collect a homogeneous alloy see... [Pg.208]

Pharmaceutical products can be readily classified and arranged by their therapeutic functions. Classification according to chemical criteria is more difficult, because the pharmaceutical industry employs more complicated steps in its manufacturing processes than most other chemical industries. In this section, we will briefly describe the various therapeutic classes of drugs and we will also include the reactions involved in the synthesis of some representative examples of drug substances. [Pg.347]

Other Specialty Surfactants. Monoalkyl phosphate, fatty alcohol ether phosphate, and fatty alcohol sulfosuccinate are some of the specialty surfactants derived from fatty alcohol with specific applications in the cosmetics and other chemical industries. [Pg.2987]

Besides only as green reaction media, ionic liquids as dual green solvents and catalysts are also widely used in acylation reactions, especially C-acylation. Benzophenone and its derivatives are important fine chemicals or intermediates in dyes, pharmaceuticals, and other chemical industries. Li et al. have studied the Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions using ionic liquids like BMlMCl-FeClj, BMIMCI-AICI3, and BMIMCl-ZnCl as dual catalyst-solvent to synthesize benzophenone and its derivatives. They found that BMIMCl-FeCl3 showed much higher catalytic activity than that observed for the other two ionic liquids, and in conventional organic... [Pg.56]

Also the chemist looks into a custom synthesis done extramuraJly. Many chemical companies bid to serve the phEirmaceutical and other chemical industries in this way. They offer to prepare a fixed quantity of a given compoimd, deliver the product on an agreed date, and keep the matter confidential, all for a predetermined fee. [Pg.60]

A few other entry-level jobs entail no laboratory work. They track an orbit remote from the pharmaceutical industry nucleus, but make indispensable contributions to this and other chemical industries and to the community of researchers. For example, the Chemical Abstracts Service employs organic chemists to summarize the world s scientific literature. Academic qualifications span the range from bachelor s to doctor s degrees strong candidates know languages like Japanese, Russian, or German. [Pg.98]

Of this capacity of 114 tons of ammonia daily, 65 tons or 57 per cent is for operation On water-gas hydrogen, 37 tons or 32 per cent is for operation on hydrogen, a by-product of other chemical industries, while only 12 tons or less than ii per cent is for operation on electrolytic hydrogen. Of the operating rate of 80 tons per day, only 3.7 per cent is on hydrogen from the electrolysis of water, while 70 per cent is on water-gas hydrogen and over 26 per cent on by-product hydrogen. [Pg.121]

The use of NIR reflectance has gained considerable interest for process analysis in the food, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and other chemical industries. This method requires little or no sample preparation and involves measurement of the reflectance of a liquid or solid sample relative to that of a standard in the same wavelength series. As illustrated in Table 3, process NIR has gained considerable use for moisture determination in coal, cosmetics, and detergent powders, as well as for protein contents of cereal and grain, and hydrogenation of unsaturated fats and oils. [Pg.3884]

Strangers to the chemical industry might be tempted to think that it is one of the most hazardous of industries the opposite is true. The US Chemical Industries (and most other chemical industries) are among the safest of all industries. Facts show that it requires a high degree of trairring arrd discipline to handle large quantities of flammable, combustible, toxic, or otherwise hazardous materials (Fig. 1.1). [Pg.5]

Co-disposal of radioactive and non-radioactive waste among other chemical, industrial, toxic and biological wastes should be carefully analysed as long as the volume of non-radioactive wastes to be disposed in a deep geological repository could be large enough to justify the construction of such a facility in each country. [Pg.39]

Different t)q)es of industries can make use of oleoresins from pines pharmaceutical and perfume industries, food additives, and other chemical industries (household cleaning products, paints, inks, varnishes, rubber, insecticides, aromatherapy). These various uses are due to their pleasant fragrance [140,141], antimicrobial activity, among various other physical and biological properties. Examples of different terpenes obtained from pine oleoresin and their importance in distinct industrial segments are listed in Table 136.4. [Pg.4047]

A trade association can play a coordinating role by stipulating that any member has to follow certain rules and r ulations, including the adoption of security measures. For example, the National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) has developed a code of responsible distribution, has mandated third-party auditing of code compliance, and has actually terminated membership for noncompliance. Other chemical industry associations such as the American Chemistry Council (ACC), Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (SOCMA), American Petroleum Institute (API), and National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) have member codes of conduct and can also play key roles in this regard. [Pg.94]

In addition to this extensive theoretical program, a visit to the Sarnia Chemical Valley, the heart of the Canadian petroleum and petrochemical industry was planned. Three major refineries (Esso s, Shell s and Suncor s), a number of petrochemical plants (Nova s, Dow s, BASF s) and other chemical industries (AKZO, LINDE, etc.) constitute a unique concentration of chemical "hardware" which makes Sarnia the ideal location for a full one day trip during the Conference. Such concentration of chemical industrial sites creates the need for very stringent controls on emissions, losses and environmental issues which were discussed during the visit. The trip to Sarnia included a visit to Esso Petroleum Canada Refinery and Dow Chemical s Petrochemical Plant, followed by presentations at Esso s Sarnia Research Department on "Strategies on Air Quality Control". The closeness of CREC-UWO to a major petrochemical site and industrial research facilities created another major justification for the development of the NATO-ASI in such a strategic location as London, Ontario. [Pg.651]

Testing prior to unloading. Get a sample from every dry and liquid chemical dehvery (compressed gases are exempt). Conduct the special tests included in the purchasing documents. These tests include, at least, appearance (for all liquid and dry chemicals) and specific gravity (for liquids). AWWA standards or other chemical industry standards list the appearance requirements, which may include color, odor, clarity, and visible foreign matter. [Pg.6]
