HCMV is widespread in the human population. In immunocompetent individuals, the infection is inapparent or associated with mild symptoms. However, HCMV is frequently transmitted perinatally and is the leading cause of neurological disease and hearing loss in congenitally infected newborns, affecting some 8,000 newborns per year in USA alone (Arvin and Alford 1990). Furthermore, following the first 100 days after transplantation, HCMV-induced pneumonia develops in about 50%... [Pg.164]

The limited toxicity data available for endosulfan suggest that several subgroups of the population may be more susceptible to endosulfan exposure than the general population. These subgroups include the unborn and neonates the elderly and people with liver, kidney, or neurological diseases, - effects that have been better characterized in animal studies. [Pg.183]

The genes of the inducible and the constitutively expressed forms of NOS have been cloned and expressed. The expression of inducible NOS in the brain tissue of animals with experimentally induced neurological disorders (boma disease virus and rabies virus in rats), herpes simplex virus (mice) and experimental allergic encephalitis (in rats) suggests that NO produced by induced NOS may be a toxic fector in the pathogenesis of neurological diseases (Koprowski et /., 1993). [Pg.267]

A number of azetidine-based compounds have been disclosed in patent applications from Aventis Pharma for CBi-modulated treatment of diseases such as obesity, Parkinson s disease, schizophrenia, respiratory and neurological diseases [330-334]. Compound (556) was specifically claimed for use in two formulation patent applications [330, 331] for a stable semi-solid composition and oral emulsion composition, respectively. The optional coadministration of an agent that activates norepinephrinergic and se-rotoninergic neurotransmission (for example, sibutramine) or dopaminergic neurotransmission was also claimed for the treatment of obesity. The optional use of a dopamine agonist (for example, levodopa) was claimed... [Pg.301]

Wilson s disease is another autosomal recessive disease leading to cirrhosis. Protein abnormalities result in excessive copper deposition in body tissues. The faulty protein is responsible for facilitating copper excretion in the bile, so copper accumulates in hepatic tissue. High copper levels within hepatocytes are toxic, and fibrosis and cirrhosis may develop in untreated patients. Those with Wilson s disease usually present with symptoms of liver or neurologic disease while still in their teens. [Pg.329]
