The AKDs are used in paper sizing appHcations. Paper sizing chemicals provide paper and paperboard with resistance to wetting by Hquids, especially water repeUency in paper cups, milk cartons, photographic paper, coatings, and packaging paper (139) (see Paper Papermaking additives). [Pg.480]

Fumaric acid occurs naturally in many plants and is named after Fumaria officinalis, a climbing aimual plant, from which it was first isolated. It is also known as (E)-2-butenedioic acid, aHomaleic acid, boletic acid, Hchenic acid, or /n j -l,2-ethylenedicarboxylic acid. It is used as a food acidulant and as a raw material in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins, quick-setting inks, furniture lacquers, paper sizing chemicals, and aspartic acid [56-84-8]. [Pg.447]

Alkenylsuccinic anhydrides made from several linear alpha olefins are used in paper sizing, detergents, and other uses. Sulfosuccinic acid esters serve as surface active agents. Alkyd resins (qv) are used as surface coatings. Chlorendric anhydride [115-27-5] is used as a flame resistant component (see Flame retardants). Tetrahydrophthalic acid [88-98-2] and hexahydrophthalic anhydride [85-42-7] have specialty resin appHcations. Gas barrier films made by grafting maleic anhydride to polypropylene [25085-53-4] film are used in food packaging (qv). Poly(maleic anhydride) [24937-72-2] is used as a scale preventer and corrosion inhibitor (see Corrosion and corrosion control). Maleic anhydride forms copolymers with ethylene glycol methyl vinyl ethers which are partially esterified for biomedical and pharmaceutical uses (189) (see Pharmaceuticals). [Pg.461]

Natural resins are generally described as solid or semisolid amorphous, fusible, organic substances that are formed in plant secretions. They are usually transparent or translucent yeUow-to-brown colored, and are soluble in organic solvents but not in water. The principal uses for natural resins are in varnishes, printing inks, adhesives, paper size, and polymer compositions. The term natural resins includes tree and plant exudates, fossil resins, mined resins, and shellac. They often have been altered from their original state during isolation and processing. For some appHcations, the resins have been chemically modified to increase their industrial utiUty. [Pg.138]

The carboxyl group reacts with metal oxides, hydroxides, or salts to form rosin soaps or salts (resinates). The soaps of alkah metals, such as sodium and potassium, are usehil in paper sizing and as emulsifiers in mbber polymerization. [Pg.139]

Poly(vinyl alcohol) will function as a non-ionic surface active agent and is used in suspension polymerisation as a protective colloid. In many applications it serves as a binder and thickener is addition to an emulsifying agent. The polymer is also employed in adhesives, binders, paper sizing, paper coatings, textile sizing, ceramics, cosmetics and as a steel quenchant. [Pg.391]

A number of water-soluble cellulose ethers are marketed." Methyl cellulose is prepared by a method similar to that used for ethyl cellulose. A degree of substitution of 1.6-1.8 is usual since the resultant ether is soluble in cold water but not in hot. It is used as a thickening agent and emulsifier in cosmetics, as a paper size, in pharmaceuticals, in ceramics and in leather tanning operations. [Pg.632]

Water-soluble polymers eomprise a major elass of polymerie materials and are used in a wide variety of applieations. Synthetie water-soluble polymers inelude poly(vinyl aleohol), poly(aerylamide), poly(aerylie aeid), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), eellulosies, and many eopolymers of these types. Their end uses are quite varied and their applieations depend mainly on their viseosify-ing, rheologieal, and surfaee-aetive properties (1). For example, poly (vinyl aleohol) is used in adhesives, fibers, textile and paper sizing, paekaging, as a stabilizer for emulsion polymerization, and as a preeursor for the manufaeture of poly(vinyl butyral), whieh is used in automotive windshields. Poly(vinyl aleohol) is also the world s largest volume, eommodity, water-soluble polymer. [Pg.559]

Although the interest in, and application of layer chromatography has historically resulted from the development of PC, it was soon replaced by thin-layer chromatography (TLC). In PC, only one stationary phase matrix is available (cellulose), at variance to TLC (silica, polyamide, ion-exchange resins, cellulose). Using a silica-gel plate, separation of a sample can be accomplished in approximately 1 h as compared with many hours on paper. The plate size is much smaller than the necessary paper size. Also, more samples can be spotted... [Pg.218]

Tall oil is made up mostly of resin acids with around 10% of neutral components. These resin acids are isomers or structurally close relatives of abietic acid (Figure 2.9) and are used as antislip agents, as a chemical feedstock and as paper-sizing agents (see Chapter 7). [Pg.25]

Examples of the fatty acids are oleic (c -9-octadecenoic) and linoleic (c ,c -9,12-octadecadienoic) acid. The major constituent of rosin acids is abietic acid. Uses of tall oil are tall oil rosin (31%, for paper size, protective coatings, adhesives, inks, and rubber), tall oil fatty acids (30%, in protective coatings, soaps, and inks), tall oil pitch (30%, in fuel, binders, coatings, rubber modifiers, asphalt, sizing, inks, and hardboard impregnation), and distilled tall oil (9%, in soaps, coatings, flotation, and board impregnation). [Pg.224]

Rosin, a brittle solid, mp 80 °C, is obtained from the gum of trees and tree stumps as a residue after steam distillation of the turpentine. It is made of 90% resin acids and 10% neutral matter. Resin acids are tricyclic monocarboxylic acids of formula C20H30O2. The common isomer is 1-abietic acid. About 38% of rosin is used as paper size (its sodium salt), in synthetic rubber as an emulsifier in polymerization (13%), in adhesives (12%), coatings (8%), and inks (8%). [Pg.414]
