The examples in the preceding section, of the flotation of lead and copper ores by xanthates, was one in which chemical forces predominated in the adsorption of the collector. Flotation processes have been applied to a number of other minerals that are either ionic in type, such as potassium chloride, or are insoluble oxides such as quartz and iron oxide, or ink pigments [needed to be removed in waste paper processing [92]]. In the case of quartz, surfactants such as alkyl amines are used, and the situation is complicated by micelle formation (see next section), which can also occur in the adsorbed layer [93, 94]. [Pg.478]

Sand. Buckets of dry sand for fire-extinguishing should be available in the laboratory and should be strictly reserved for this purpose, and not encumbered with sand-baths, waste-paper, etc. Most fires on the bench may be quickly smothered by the ample use of sand. The type of paperboard used by the carton industry is boxboard. Boxboard may be categorized, based on the raw material, as combination or soHd boxboard. Combination boxboard, of which there are many grades, normally is made on a multicylinder paper machine using a substantial percentage of waste paper with virgin pulp. SoHd boxboard usually is made on a Fourdrinier paper machine using only virgin pulp and it is bleached or coated. [Pg.12]

Secondary Fiber. Increasing costs of taw fiber, legislative mandates for recycling (qv), and avadabdity of inexpensive waste papers have contfibuted to the increased use of recycled fibers. The use of secondary fiber in the United States has grown from 22% of pulp from all sources in 1978 to close to 31% (24 x 10 metric tons) in 1993 (3).
