Paper size reaction

The only proof of the above contention are the results in Figure 3 of the paper where reaction rate is approximately proportional to external area. Figure A here shows the pore size distribution (from mercury penetration (3)) of each particle size, confirming that little additional pore structure was opened up during coal grinding. This would rule out the possibility that the effect measured in Figure 3 was caused by opening up entrances to sealed pores. [Pg.470]

Lastly, we would like to mention here results of the two kinds of large-scale computer simulations of diffusion-controlled bimolecular reactions [33, 48], In the former paper [48] reactions were simulated using random walks on a d-dimensional (1 to 4) hypercubic lattice with the imposed periodic boundary conditions. In the particular case of the A + B - 0 reaction, D = Dq and nA(0) = nB(0), the critical exponents 0.26 0.01 0.50 0.02 and 0.89 0.02 were obtained for d = 1 to 3 respectively. The theoretical value of a = 0.75 expected for d = 3 was not achieved due to cluster size effects. The result for d = 4, a = 1.02 0.02, confirms that this is a marginal dimension. However, in the case of the A + B — B reaction with DB = 0, the asymptotic longtime behaviour, equation (2.1.106), was not achieved at all - even at very long reaction times of 105 Monte Carlo steps, which were sufficient for all other kinds of bimolecular reactions simulated. It was concluded that in practice this theoretically derived asymptotics is hardly accessible. [Pg.353]

The effect of acidity caused by alum-rosin size has been obviated by the substitution of sizing agents which are effective slightly on the alkaline side of neutrality. It has been established that papers of satisfactory permanence can be manufactured with such sizes. It is possible to use rosin as a size and to avoid the conjunction with alum by a number of processes. There are insufficient data on the aging characteristics of paper sized with the available modified rosin sizes to judge the effect on permanence. Possible reactions of the rosin, such as oxidation and formation of peroxides, must be considered. [Pg.281]

A particular type of cellulose esters are those formed with paper sizing agents such as alkylketene dimers (AKD) or alkenylsuccinic anhydride (ASA) [47], The reaction of cellulose with alkylketene dimers generates p-ketoesters ... [Pg.262]

Use Hot-melt and pressure-sensitive adhesives, mastics and sealants, varnishes, ester gum, soldering compounds, core oils, insulating compounds, soaps, paper sizing, printing inks, polyesters (formed by reaction of the conjugated acids of rosin with acrylic acid, followed by reaction with a glycol). [Pg.1096]

Magnesium sulfate, a substance used for fireproofing and paper sizing, is made in industry from the reaction of aqueous sulfuric acid and solid magnesium hydroxide. Write the complete equation for this reaction. [Pg.206]

The aspects relevant to the use of rosin as such, or one of the derivatives arising from its appropriate chemical modification as monomer or comonomer [12-14], have to do with the synthesis of a variety of materials based on polycondensations and polyaddition reactions of structures bearing such moieties as primary amines, maleimides, epoxies, alkenyls and, of course, carboxylic acids. These polymers find applications in paper sizing, adhesion and tack, emulsification, coatings, drug delivery and printing inks. [Pg.6]

The reaction of starch with bis(hydroxymethyl)ethyleneurea condensed with cationic poly(urea amides) and cationic polyamides was used to produce paper sizes, adhesives, and textile-finishing agents.2616 Cationic starch that has been prepared from starch and cyanamide was patented for sizing wood and for synthetic wool fibers and fabrics.2296,2298,2662 Reaction of starch urethanes with alkylene oxides and aldehydes was reported for use as hardenable compounds in waterproof films, coatings, and adhesives.2663... [Pg.288]
