Carbolic acids

Physical properties. All solid except m -cresol, CH3CJH4OH, which is a liquid. All colourless when pure, but frequently slightly coloured due to atmospheric oxidation. All have in varying degrees a characteristic odour of carbolic acid. Phenol, the cresols and resorcinol have a caustic action on the skin. [Pg.337]

Phenol, once known as carbolic acid, HC6H50, is a weak add. It was one of the first antiseptics used by lister. Its K, is 1.1 X 10-1C. A solution of phenol is prepared by dissolving 14.5 g of phenol in enough water to make 892 mL of solution. For this solution, calculate... [Pg.379]

Although phenols would appear to be alcohols, because they have an -OH group like alcohols, they do not react like alcohols but instead have the chemical properties of acids. For example, they form salts when reacted with a base. This is the reason that the common name for phenol for many years was carbolic acid. [Pg.88]

Phenol (C5H5OH) or carbolic acid is an aromatic hydrocarbon derived originally from coal tar, but prepared synthetically in a process that utilizes monochlorobenzene as a starting point. Ninety-eight percent phenol appears as transparent crystals, while liquefied phenol consists of 88% USP solution of phenol in water. [Pg.70]

Phenol is an important chemical, from the point of its industrial and commercial applications, but is of great environmental apprehension due to its toxicity. Its chemical name is hydroxybenzene which is more acidic compared to aliphatic alcohols hence is also known as carbolic acid [4]. At ambient temperature and pressure it is a hygroscopic crystalline solid, which is colourless when pure [5] but... [Pg.287]

Carbolic acid is the old-fashioned name for hydroxybenzene (VII), otherwise known as phenol. It was first used as an antiseptic to prevent the infection of post-operative wounds. The British surgeon Joseph (later Lord ) Lister (1827-1912) discovered these antiseptic qualities in 1867 while working as Professor of Medicine at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He squirted a... [Pg.254]

Phenol in water is relatively reactive, thereby explaining its potency against bacteria. But phenol dissolved in water contains relatively few solvated protons, so it is not particularly acidic. But its old name is carbolic acid ... [Pg.255]

Historically, carbolic acid was so called because solid phenol causes nasty chemical burns to the skin. The root carbo comes from the French for coal. ... [Pg.255]

In summary, carbolic acid (phenol, VII) is an extremely weak acid because its value of K 1 is 1CT10, quantifying how small is the concentration of solvated protons in its solutions. [Pg.257]

Phenol has been used for decades in the medical field as an antiseptic under its alias, carbolic acid, and at one time as a preservative of human organs under the name creosote (from the Greek kreos, flesh and sogein to preserve). The name creosote eventually became associated with the wood preservative, but phenol remains the principal ingredient in this product. [Pg.111]
