Several objective methods are available to determine the freshness of shrimp however, many require a) raw products for analysis, b) complex chemistry and equipment for testing, or c) highly trained technicians. Additionally, some of these methods require extensive analysis time making results meaningless if product has already spoiled or has been released to consumers. Results for the impedance method discussed in the present paper demonstrate that spoilage of raw or thermally processed shrimp can be detect in 30 min with easy sample preparation. The limitations of this method revolve around the requirement for authentic fresh frozen standards as a basis for comparison. Further research is necessary to define the effect of seasonal and geographical variations, and species and size difference. The sum of these factors will likely affect the reproducibility of this method. [Pg.260]

According to Still s 1978 Journal of Organic Chemistry paper (StUl, W. C. Kahn, M. Mitra, A. J. Org. Chem. 1978,43, 2923), the size of the glass column depends on the scale of the separation. Eirst, a solvent system is chosen based on its polarity so that the desired product has an Rf of 0.3. For a mixture of 1 g of compounds, 25 g of silica gel is used, on average. [Pg.41]

Carbon black finds its way into many products inks, paints, paper, fertilizer, plastics, and explosives to name a few. By far the major use, however, is in automotive tires which consume 65% of the total production. The present day tire contains roughly 1 pound of carbon black for each 2 pounds of rubber and provides both the bounce and wear characteristics desired by the user. The properties carbon black imparts to rubber compounds are so critical that there are currently more than 20 classified grades of oil blacks. Most distinctions between grades are mainly a function of particle size and structure, although surface chemistry is sometimes a factor for specialty uses. The more important grade designations are illustrated in Table I. Each of those listed are also subdivided according to their structure levels. [Pg.271]

At the 4th Rubber Modified Asphalt Conference held in Akron, OH, USA in 2009, a wide-ranging paper was presented by Baumgartner [54] that addressed topics such as modified asphalt formulations, optimisation of the process temperature, and the ground tyre rubber loadings and particle size optimisation. The paper showed that rubber crumb produced from whole tyres contains around 30% reactive material for asphalt modification and that the asphalt source and chemistry directly influence the rubber loading and the final properties of the product. The processing time and temperature are also very important, as is the particle size of the crumb, which affects the efficiency of modification and the long-term performance. [Pg.203]
