Dicyandiamide reduces the viscosity of certain coUoidal solutions. This property is of commercial significance ia the manufacture of glues and adhesives, ia the coating and sizing of paper and textiles, and ia the conditioning of phosphate drilling muds (see Petroleum). This action may prove useful ia other appHcations where control of viscosity is important (54). [Pg.371]

The ink for inkjet printers is essentially colored water, and the current formulation of ink is about 75% water, plus dye and glue (Kang 1991, Le 1998, Pond 1999). The ink should flow readily from ihe inkwell to the nozzle, and then to the paper, without dripping or clogging. The viscosity of current inkjet ink is from 2 to 8 cP. The droplets formed should be very uniform in size, and should be as small as possible to increase the resolution. When the droplet hits the paper, the droplet should penetrate the fibers without splatter, which would increase the diameter of the dot on the printed text or picture. The surface tension of current ink is around 45 to 50 dynes/cm, which is much lower than water at 70 dynes/cm. It is believed that if the surface tension is raised from 45 to 65 dynes/cm, the spread (or ratio of diameter of spot on paper/diameter of droplet) would decrease from 3.3 to 1.1. Much higher resolutions... [Pg.278]

Gelatin is used in foods, usually as a stabilizer or thickener. It is made into capsules for medicines, in glues and binders, in cosmetics, as sizing in paper, and in photographic emulsions. [Pg.150]

The paper machine came into use around 1830. Before, paper had been sized in a separate operation with gelatine or glue. Now a new size was introduced, rosin and alum, which could be added to the beaten stock. The paper then came from the machine in the sized condition. The amount of alum required for sizing left the paper acid. This was the final blow to permanence. Acid paper does not last well it quickly turns brown and brittle. The life of paper which under good conditions could be 2000 years now was reduced to around 75 years. [Pg.45]

First cut a number of discs from cardboard that are the saine size as the Inside diameter of your mortar Next obtain some empty (fired 16 ga. and empty 12 ga. shotgun shells Punch the primer out of the 16 ga. shell, Insert a length of firecracker fuse and fill the remainder of the primer hole with tissue paper. Seal the fuse In with glue. [Pg.21]

This process continues until a stack of alternating wet paper and felt has built up. The stack is placed in a press to eliminate any residual water. Then the paper and felt are separated, and the paper is pressed by itself and hung up to dry. When dry, the paper sheets are dipped in a tub containing size (essentially gelatin or very dilute glue) and dried again. This gives the paper a harder and less absorbent finish than it would otherwise have had. [Pg.750]
