Packaging quality standards

In discussing packaging quality standards it has to be agreed that no component quality examination can start before construction of the material specification, and the reverse is equally true. The final component specification and the quality inspection procedure must be viewed together, and completed to a similar time scale to realise maximum component potential fully. 

There are two stages in the development of a packaging quality standard for a food product. The first is to prove that the package is suitable, possibly by laboratory techniques in the first instance and then by small field trials. In this phase, the food is packed and stored under known conditions for predetermined periods, and the tests required, both organoleptic and chemical, are carried out to determine the state of the food at intervals.

The appropriate response to this observation would be for the firm to revisit its supplier qualification policy and procedures to ensure that they meet current regulatory requirements as well as internal quality standards. Second, the firm will present the agency with a package of new and improved procedures and an umbrella policy related to a state-of-the-art vendor qualification program. These procedures will ensure that all critical suppliers are audited and monitored appropriately in accordance with predetermined criteria and audit protocols. Audit protocols will be designed to meet the unique aspects of every supplier. 

A packaging material with exceptional importance for food is PE. Depending on the source of this plastic, water brought in contact can produce various nuances of a characteristic odor as well as flavor changes. The description of this PE odor ranges from candle-like, stale, stuffy, musty, to soapy or rancid. For this reason PE used for food applications has particularly high quality standards set. 

Flexible packaging supplier, Wentus, was founded in 1965 and is now part of the Clondalkin Group. The company employs over 400 people and has a production capacity in excess of 45,000 tonnes/ year. It is one of the largest producers of speciality polyolefin films and packaging in Germany and is certified according to quality standard DIN ISO 9001. 

Many industrial processes require accurate environmental control. Using a conventional additive package, fixed-bed gasoline meets other quality standards such as storage stability, copper attack, multimetal corrosion, carburetor detergency, fi1terabi1ity, emulsion formation, and metals retention. 

This can be more complicated, since it will rely on the assessment of a company s potential ability, separate from the actual context of historical performance. Ideally any new supplier should be certificated to a national or international quality standard (e.g. ISO 9000), with an already audited and proven quality system. (During the 1990s many UK packaging companies have been independently certificated to the Pharmaceutical Supplier Codes of Practice, which are linked to ISO 9002.)... 

To approve those suppliers of raw materials and packaging materials who are known to believed to be capable of reliably supplying products meeting the company s established quality standard. 

Pharmaceutical products must meet special quality standards in view of their application. The development, manufacture and packaging, and control must therefore be carried out in such a manner that the quality is adequately preserved. To this end, it is necessary to develop an integrated quality assurance system. Such a Quality Assurance System covers the quality of design as well as the quality of the product as it is marketed (quality of conformity). 

Although it is generally agreed that a thank-you note should be short, opinions differ as to whether it should be handwritten or typed. It is safe to say, however, that if a company is conservative, the best bet would be to write your thanks by hand on a small, plain, good-quality note card (5" x 3/ "). On the other hand, you can type your thanks on good-quality, standard size (8/ " x 11") stationery. Some job candidates use the same paper and style of heading they used for their resumes and cover letters. (In this instance, the thank-you note is considered the final addition to the resume package they ve already submitted.) The format is less important than the time frame, however. A thank-you note should be mailed no later than a day after an interview. 

The skin packaging method is advantageous for simultaneous packing of products of different shape and size, it is distinguished by high production standards, rather high efficiency and package quality. 

The activities of a supply chain is affected by both national and international regulatory requirements on packaging, storage, pallets, vehicles, working hours, tariffs and many other issues. In addition an organization maintains its own quality standards and service level agreements with suppliers and partners. 

The success of such highly innovative products is linked to the achievement of high quality standards. In the field of bioplastics, quality mainly means environmental quality. Standardisation Committees at national and international level have been working for many years in the definition of standard test methods to assure the biodegradability and full environmental compatibility of the new bio-plastics. Standards such as the European EN 13432 on the compostability of packaging (CEN TC261SC4WG2) and other related norms at international level are now in place, whereas standards on biodegradation of bioplastics in soil are still under discussion.

It is very important to realise that the quality of a packaging material is something that is controlled only by the packaging supplier, and so-called "packaging quality control departments in a food manufacturing unit cannot control the quality of the packaging material which they receive from their suppliers— they can only check it to determine whether it meets the standard or not. 

The quality module must contain information on the identity, characteristics, manufacturing methods, control, packaging and stability of both the drug substance and final drug product. The standard headings used to present this information are shown in Figure 6.2.
