Software standards

Products in Group 3 seem to us to represent the future of practical batch process control. In such systems, modern workstations perform the single-user functions (e.g control system design, set-up, and maintenance operator interface data collection historical reporting) for which they were designed, while powerful multitasking controllers perform actual control. As computer hardware and software standards continue to evolve toward distributed networks of processors optimized for specific kinds of tasks, such systems will, we feel, proliferate rapidly. [Pg.474]

In computerese, operating discipline is the software—standards, written procedures, operating instructions, guidelines, training, supervision, and conduct—needed to operate a plant successfully. [Pg.298]

When purchasing system software, standard instruments, microcontrollers, smart instruments, and standard software packages, it is the practice of organizations to initially rely on the history of the supplier and the industry operating experience as assurance of the supplier capability of program performance suitability. [Pg.120]

Documentation should include items such as size of the hard disk, internal memory (RAM), installed type and version of operating software, standard application software and user-contributed software, e.g., Macro programs. This information is important because all items can influence the overall performance of a computer system. The information should be readily available in case a problem occurs with the computer system. Table 3 includes items for proper documentation of computer hardware and software. [Pg.47]

The following systems or system components can be distinguished local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), network operating system (NOS), operating system (OS), application software, database management software, standard application software, hardware, documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Table 13.1 provides examples of systems and components, and the types of changes that may occur with each system or component. [Pg.352]

The first software standard to adopt an evidential approach was the Civil Aviation Authority s SWOl. This is the first part of a 3 part standard (HWOl, covering hardware, and SYSOl covering systems will follow). Some assumptions regarding the content of SYSOl are made by SWOl, namely that software safety requirements have been derived from a full risk and safety analysis of the system . [Pg.173]

As PROFISAFE communication protocol has the built in safety features, all connected devices in PROFIBUS DP and PA, as well as PROFINET, can use the same for safety application. This also facilitates uses of devices in two buses to communicate without the need for any gateway and or bridge. A similar thing has been shown in Fig. VII/2.2.4-1 also. In common CPU with failsafe software, standard and fail-safe I/Os can be connected by common PROFIBUS DP. In application, there shall be two parts one fail-safe which shall communicate with fail-safe I/Os, whereas so-called non-interfering application can be there for standard I/Os as shown in Fig. IX/2.2.3-2. PROFISAFE has TUV Certification to lEC 61,508 SIL 3/EN 954-1 Cat 4. [Pg.640]

AUTOSAR is a software standard for the automotive industry providing the specification of the basic software components, such as several protocol stacks, memory management. [Pg.82]

Open architecture systems are systems that provide a varied combination of interoperability, portability, and open software standards. It can also mean systems configured to allow unrestricted access by people or other computers. Open architecture will most likely apply primarily to system backbones, such as the network structure, computer structure, and operating systems. Application hardware and software will plug into these backbone structures, but will themselves probably not be open. For example, the IBM PC hardware has an open architecture, whereas the Apple home computer has a closed architecture. The open architecture allows third-party vendors to develop hardware for the PC. Linux is software that is an open architecture operating system that allows users to modify it and make their own enhancements, whereas Microsoft Windows is not open architecture. [Pg.272]

Another important thing to note about software standards is that they must always grow. Shrinkage is considered unthinkable. Most ISO language standards grow substantially in size at each standards cycle until they collapse into obscurity rather like stars which exceed the Chandrasekhar limit and collapse into a white dwarf. For example the ISO C standard increased from 190 pages in ISO C 9899 1990 to around 400 pages in ISO C 9899 1999. This is a natmal implication... [Pg.32]

The embedded operating system we use for our experiments has been designed and developed according to the ARINC 653 avionics standard Avionics Application Software Standard Interface). The ARINC 653 is a standard interface for time and space partitioning of embedded systems resources. It is compliant with the IMA Integrated Modular Avionics) trend. The main objective of IMA is to simplify the integration of avionics software, by proposing the use of... [Pg.147]

The next chapter by Dennis Smith of MDL describes hardware and software standards in detail. The reader who is particularly concerned with information technology would be well advised to read this. The chapter is a technical and technocommercial one. It is not intended simply to explain MDL s commercial position, any more than Chapter 6, by Chemical Abstracts Service authors, is... [Pg.6]
