Steels having adequate hardenabiHty develop martensitic stmctures in practical section sizes. Molybdenum is a potent contributor to hardenabiHty, and has been shown to be even more effective in the presence of carehiUy selected amounts of other alloying elements (26). The end-quench test has become the accepted method for measuring hardenabiHty, and the data can be correlated with section size. Technical societies worldwide have standardized hardenabiHty limits (bands) for a large number of carbon and alloy steels standards of the Society of Automotive Engineers are examples (27). 

Design parameters as a function of temperature and design temperature limits are set forth in the ANSI/ASME B31 Piping Codes for a very broad range of materials. These codes, and the additional information available from manufacturers, vendors, and technical societies such as the National Association of Corrosion Engineers provide ample data for the selection of materials for piping systems (1—13).

Although there is no substitute for individual action based on a firm philosophical and ethical foundation, designers have developed guidelines for professional conduct based on the experience of many of them who have had to wrestle with troublesome ethical questions and situations previously. These guidelines can be found in the published codes of ethics for designers and engineers of a number of industry and technical societies such as the Industrial Designer societies.

He has organized and chaired numerous technical society meetings. In addition, he has served on the Safe Drinking Water Committee of the National Academy of Sciences, for which he chaired the Subcommittee on Adsorption, and was a consultant to the Water Reuse Panel of the National Academy of Sciences. 

Some trade organizations and technical societies were invited to submit nominees for membership in WRISE and 20 individuals have been selected as initial Institute members. All possess credentials of accomplishment in pollution prevention, show evidence of a continuing interest in environmental protection and are, or have been, responsible for plant management or process design/selection or are highly knowledgeable of industrial operations for which waste reduction techniques are applicable. 

The amazing evolution of solid state physics and chemistry over the last 30 years induced an intensive study of various solid state processes, particularly in the context of materials science. Materials have always been an important feature of civilization and are the basis of our modern technical society. Their preparation is often due solely to reactions between solids. Solid state reactions are also often responsible for the materials adaptation to a specific technical purpose, or for the degradation of a material. 

In the opinion of the Metrication Committee, there is no longer any question about eventual conversion to the metric system, and to SI in particular. The only question really is, when and how AIChE is following the practice being instituted by many technical societies we are not either leading or trailing significantly at present. 

Scholarly societies and societies in the applied sciences often issue reports to member organizations or individuals. These reports are usually published later, but one can often make use of data prior to publication. It is useful to consult the National Research Councirs Scientific and Technical Societies of the United States (II) for subjects when searching for the name of societies in a particular field. The Encyclopedia of American Associations is also a helpful tool.
