A major use for 2,4-di-/ f2 -amylphenol is in the production of uv stabilizers the principal one is a benzotriazole-based uv absorber, 2-(2 -hydroxy-3, 5 -di-/ f2 -amylphenyl)-5-chlorobenzotriazole [25973-55-17, which is widely used in polyolefin films, outdoor furniture, and clear coat automotive finishes (56). Mixtures of a titanium complex of saturated diols, such as TYZOR OGT, and a titanium acylate, such as bis- -butyl-bis-caproic acid titanate, do not have a yellowing or discoloring effect on white inks used to print polyolefin surfaces (506). The complexes formed by the reaction of one or two moles of diethyl citrate with TYZOR TPT have an insignificant color on their own and do not generate color with phenol-based antioxidants (507). Flame treatment is predominantly used with articles of relatively thick section, such as blow moulded bottles, although it has been applied to polyolefin films as well. Recently Serenyl used a flexible alkaline separator (FAS) in Silver—Zinc cells, which consists of a microporous polyolefin film, with inorganic filler. This can be folded around the silver and/or zinc electrodes to form conventional U wraps or heat sealed bags. There have been more efforts to use blends such as Nova Chemicals Arcel (an ethylene styrene interpolymer in bead form) to create a more durable foam than EPS. EPP can be moulded into complex shapes, with the steam bonding of the beads (291). These packaging foams compete with polyolefin film products such as Jiffy foam (bubblewrap) and macrobubbles made by heat sealing 150 mm lengths of tubular LDPE film. Today, corona discharge is the electrical method used most widely and is one of the most popular for preparing the surfaces of polyolefin films. It relies on establishing a corona discharge between an electrode and an earthed roller covered by a dielectric layer the film is passed over the roller and the discharge renders the surface of the film receptive to inks. Sherman and co-authors12 described the theoretical electrical relationships in the treatment equipment and by means of the Lissajous technique for measuring power demonstrated how much true power was dissipated in the material under treatment. The Films division is one of the major producers of polyolefin films in Europe and an important converter of films, papers and other web form materials. The materials are mainly used for technical applications such as label and graphic arts, adhesive tapes, building and construction, automotive and packaging. [Pg.119]

Flexible packaging supplier, Wentus, was founded in 1965 and is now part of the Clondalkin Group. The company employs over 400 people and has a production capacity in excess of 45,000 tonnes/ year. Presented here are only the methods that the author has tested in practice on plastics wastes. The first attempts were undertaken in 1986 in a small pilot unit that dealt with wastes of polyolefin films used for packaging. Those wastes were nonpigmented, transparent and rather clean. They were provided by waste collectors in blocks of approximately 30 kg, intended for factories producing regenerated granules (recyclate).
