There are several other aspects about CSTRs with exothermic reactions that should be mentioned at this point. The first involves the temperature of the feed. The colder the feed, the less heat must be transferred from the reactor. So control would be expected to be improved. However, as we will see in Chapter 3, a cold feed can produce some interesting dynamics for instance, an increase in feed flowrate initially decreases reactor temperature because of the sensible-heat effect. But as the reactant concentration in the reactor increases, the temperature eventually increases. A reactor temperature runaway can result if the cold feed quenches the reaction and reactant concentration builds to a very high level before the reaction lights off.  [Pg.48]

The second item is the concentration of the reactant in the feed. We considered the case in which the feed is pure reactant A and found a heat removal rate for a given conversion and reactor temperature. However, suppose that the feed were a mixture of reactant A and product B. Now for the same feedrate and conversion, there is less of A to react so the heat transfer requirements are lower. This indicates one method of improving reactor controllability, which is to reduce reactant feed composition by diluting the feed with some nonreactive component. Of course, the downside of this approach is that there must be more material to recycle, which increases capital and energy costs. [Pg.48]

The third item is other ways to increase heat transfer area. They include circulating reactor liquid through an external heat exchanger or autorefrigeration. The dynamics of both of these alternatives will be studied in Chapter 3. As earlier mentioned, for a jacketed reactor, the heat transfer area can be increased by using larger aspect ratios. [Pg.48]

The origin of the acceleration produced by BFj in epoxide alkylation reactions has been examined theoretically [124]. A plausible pathway for BFj participation in the epoxide-opening is shown in Fig. 10.5. An epoxide/BFj complex CPI may encounter the cuprate duster to form a ternary complex CP2, or such a complex may [Pg.332]

Me SiCl also affects the stereoselectivity of lj2-additions to carbonyl compounds [133]. With the aid of suitable activators these mildly reactive reagents show selectivities unattainable by the conventional reagents as illustrated below for MejSiCl-dependent diemoselectivity (Eq. 10.13) [134]. [Pg.334]

Note that the pressure controller is on automatic during this disturbance, so the condenser heat removal in increased in the base model (dashed Une in top left graph in Fig. 13.11) and condenser cooling water flow rate is increased in the rigorous model (top right graph). [Pg.397]

The numerical example used in this study has a large column (5.61 m in diameter) with large reboiler and condenser duties. Are these results applicable with smaller columns The answer is yes. All the vessel volumes and heat-transfer areas scale directly with flow rates, so the dynamics should be the same. The only exception is tray liquid hydraulics because weir lengths scale directly with column diameter, not cross-sectional area. So, liquid height of the weir is different for different capacities. However, the short-term pressure responses should not be affected by liquid flow rates. [Pg.397]

The standard basic RadFrac model in Aspen simulations does not accurately predict the rapid pressure changes during emergency situations because the default heat-exchanger models do not account for heat-exchanger dynamics (condenser and reboiler). Simulations can be developed that include external heat exchangers whose dynamics can be incorporated with the model of the column vessel. [Pg.398]

Many neutron radiography facilities are under-utilized. Therefore, prior to installing a new facility, it is recommended that a reactor planning the installation be assured of a significant local market that cannot get its needs met elsewhere. Alternatively, the design and installation of a real time radiography facility could be based on new and previously untried applications that cannot be performed at existing under-utilized facilities. [Pg.30]

The previous discussion has concentrated on major factors likely to be important in choosing the best mass spectrometer for a given defined purpose. Clearly, there are likely to be other issues that need to be considered, and instrument price will be one of these. The major considerations are listed in Tables 39.1-4. [Pg.285]

A trade secret owner may also beneficially exploit the trade secret through licensing, sales, or various other business ventures based on the confidential information. Such cooperative ventures often raise other issues. Exploitation of trade secret information may also occur through the unintended disclosure of this information to the pubHc. Generally, the people who learn of trade secret information tend to be the trade secret owner s employees, customers, Hcensees, suppHers, and joint venture partners. [Pg.40]

Occasionally, an otherwise good candidate toller may need to be rejected or conditionally approved until assurance can be made that contamination, improper storage facilities, confidentiality and other issues are properly managed. [Pg.38]

It is necessary for the PSSR team to perform a detailed physical inspection of the new or changed process. This can help find items like physical obstructions, potential for unintended mixing, siphoning, and other issues prior to the testing phase. [Pg.98]

Has the facility received complaints from the public or received attention m the local media for noise, odor, or any other issue If yes, indicate the approximate number of complaints and describe the nature of complaints. [Pg.166]

Assign a weighting factor (1 to 10) to the various parameters based on your judgment of the relative importance of this Safety, Health and Environmental, or other issue. [Pg.23]

We could go through that same kind of problem analysis for many different structures, and, in the process, design requirements could be expressed for each of them. The most common (Jesign requirements would be expressed in some manner in terms of strength, stiffness, and life, but there are many other issues as well. Whether the material will corrode, for example. Whether it will provide the proper insulation or just the opposite, sufficient conductivity, and so on. There are many, many different types of tasks that we ask a structure to perform. [Pg.423]

The United Nations officially came into existence at the end of World War II on October 24, 1945 to help stabilize international relations and better secure peace. Through the years, the UN has greatly expanded its mission to include other issues such as development and protecting the environment. Because energy is such a key piece of the develop-... [Pg.583]

The thiocarbonylthio group can be transformed post-polymerization in a variety of ways to produce end-functional polymers or it can be removed. The presence of the thiocarbonylthio groups also means that the polymers synthesized by RAFT polymerization are usually colored and they possess a labile end group that may decompose to produce sometimes odorous byproducts. Even though the color and other issues may be modified by appropriate selection of the initial RAFT agent, these issues have provided further incentive to develop effective methods for treatment of RAFT-synthesized polymer to transform the thiocarbonylthio groups post-polymerization. [Pg.538]

These and other issues about flow control become critical as real-world features to enhance ease of use are added to a system, features we do not illustrate in our example. We will instead focus on complications of the data structure that are evident even in our simple procedure. [Pg.55]

It is worth drawing attention to the significance of other issues. In natural ecosystans, other microorganisms including bacteria are almost always present and it has been shown that, in experiments using [7,10- C]benzo[a]pyrene, incubation for 215 d mth Bjerkandera sp. strain BOS55 alone resulted in the formation of 13.5% C02 and 61% of labeled metabolites in the... [Pg.651]

Examining the inspectors workloads will also help to establish reasons for the success or failure of the inspection process. EHiring their inspection of pharmaceutical establishments, inspectors may learn of the presence of unregistered products, counterfeit products, etc. Quantitative information on these and other issues is valuable as an outcome measure. [Pg.120]

Trace analysis of soil samples often requires post-extraction cleanup to remove coextracted matrix interferences. There are several difficulties that may arise during chromatographic analysis due to interferences present in sample extracts. To avoid these and other issues, one or more of the following cleanup techniques are often used. [Pg.876]

These and others issues linked both with experimental substantiation of the detection methods themselves as well as with tiie experimental verification of above relationships between the values of the signals of sensor with concentrations of particles detected will be considered in detail in the next chapter. [Pg.164]
