Noticing

An additional advantage derived from plotting the residuals is that it can aid in detecting a bad data point. If one of the points noticeably deviates from the trend line, it is probably due to a mistake in sampling, analysis, or reporting. The best action would be to repeat the measurement. However, this is often impractical. The alternative is to reject the datum if its occurrence is so improbable that it would not reasonably be expected to occur in the given set of experiments. [Pg.107]

Adsorption may in principle occur at all surfaces its magnitude is particularly noticeable when porous solids, which have a high surface area, such as silica gel or charcoal are contacted with gases or liquids. Adsorption processes may involve either simple uni-molecular adsorbate layers or multilayers the forces which bind the adsorbate to the surface may be physical or chemical in nature. [Pg.16]

Utilization of LPG as motor fuel represents only a tiny fraction of the market, on the order of 30,000 t/an in France out of a total 3,000,000 t that is, about 1%. Globally, the fraction of LPG used in the transportation industry is on the order of 5% the other applications are essentially petrochemicals (25%) and the heating fuel sectors (70%). However noticeable openings in the LPG-fuel markets in some countries such as Japan (1.8 Mt), the United States (1.3 Mt), the Netherlands (0.9 Mt), Italy (0.8 Mt) and in certain regions (Latin America, Africa, and the Far East) have been observed for specialized vehicles such as taxis. [Pg.230]

The winter period corresponds, of course, to the moment in the year where the diesel fuel and home-heating oil characteristics are noticeably different. Table 5.18 gives a typical example of tbe recorded differences heating oil appears more dense and viscous than diesel fuel, while its initial and final boiling points are higher. [Pg.233]

The tendency to separate is expressed most often by the cloud point, the temperature at which the fuei-alcohol mixture loses its clarity, the first symptom of insolubility. Figure 5.17 gives an example of how the cloud-point temperature changes with the water content for different mixtures of gasoline and methanol. It appears that for a total water content of 500 ppm, that which can be easily observed considering the hydroscopic character of methanol, instability arrives when the temperature approaches 0°C. This situation is unacceptable and is the reason that incorporating methanol in a fuel implies that it be accompanied by a cosolvent. One of the most effective in this domain is tertiary butyl alcohol, TBA. Thus a mixture of 3% methanol and 2% TBA has been used for several years in Germany without noticeable incident. [Pg.244]

The main justification for diesel fuel desulfurization is related to particulate emissions which are subject to very strict rules. Part of the sulfur is transformed first into SO3, then into hydrated sulfuric acid on the filter designed to collect the particulates. Figure 5.21 gives an estimate of the variation of the particulate weights as a function of sulfur content of diesel fuel for heavy vehicles. The effect is greater when the test cycle contains more high temperature operating phases which favor the transformation of SO2 to SO3. This is particularly noticeable in the standard cycle used in Europe (ECE R49). [Pg.254]

If a situation arises whereby formation fluid or gas enters the bore bole the driller will notice an increase in the total volume of mud. Other indications such as a sudden increase in penetration rate and a decrease in pump pressure may also indicate an influx. Much depends on a quick response of the driller to close in the well before substantial volumes of formation fluid have entered the borehole. Onoe the BOP is closed, the new mud gradient required to restore balance to the system can be calculated. The heavier mud is then circulated in through the kill line and the lighter mud and influx is circulated out through the choke line. It is easy to notice, that the protection against a short-circuit failure in the X-ray tube circuit implements due to the "soft" outer characteristic of the apparatus main circuit. The overvoltage protection at emergencies in the control system happens due to the redistribution of the magnetie flow, created by power winding I, between the 3,6 control yokes. Therefore the voltage on the X-ray apparatus anode drops approximately two times. [Pg.431]

Figure 1. shows the measured phase differenee derived using equation (6). A close match between the three sets of data points can be seen. Small jumps in the phase delay at 5tt, 3tt and most noticeably at tt are the result of the mathematical analysis used. As the cell is rotated such that tlie optical axis of the crystal structure runs parallel to the angle of polarisation, the cell acts as a phase-only modulator, and the voltage induced refractive index change no longer provides rotation of polarisation. This is desirable as ultimately the device is to be introduced to an interferometer, and any differing polarisations induced in the beams of such a device results in lower intensity modulation. [Pg.682]

It must be remembered that, in general, the constants a and b of the van der Waals equation depend on volume and on temperature. Some representative plots of entropies of adsorption are shown in Fig. XVII-23, in general, T AS2 is comparable to Ah2, so that the entropy contribution to the free energy of adsorption is important. The sequence of events in a surface-catalyzed reaction comprises (1) diffusion of reactants to the surface (usually considered to be fast) (2) adsorption of the reactants on the surface (slow if activated) (3) surface diffusion of reactants to active sites (if the adsorption is mobile) (4) reaction of the adsorbed species (often rate-determining) (5) desorption of the reaction products (often slow) and (6) diffusion of the products away from the surface. Processes 1 and 6 may be rate-determining where one is dealing with a porous catalyst [197]. The situation is illustrated in Fig. XVIII-22 (see also Ref. 198 notice in the figure the variety of processes that may be present). [Pg.720]

One should also notice that resonant excitation completely cycles the population between the lower and upper state with a period of 2ji/0. Non-resonant excitation also cycles population between the states but never completely depopulates the lower state.
