Quick response

If a situation arises whereby formation fluid or gas enters the bore bole the driller will notice an increase in the total volume of mud. Other indications such as a sudden increase in penetration rate and a decrease in pump pressure may also indicate an influx. Much depends on a quick response of the driller to close in the well before substantial volumes of formation fluid have entered the borehole. Onoe the BOP is closed, the new mud gradient required to restore balance to the system can be calculated. The heavier mud is then circulated in through the kill line and the lighter mud and influx is circulated out through the choke line. Once overbalance is restored, the BOP can be opened again and drilling operations continue. 

The vertical position is preferred if the plot space is tight. Horizontal vessels are easier to support and are preferred when large Hquid surge volumes are required. The Hquid level displacement height for a unit volume is much less for a horizontal vessel than for a vertical vessel, which makes the control range shorter than for a vertical vessel. The displacement height per unit volume is only approximately linear on horizontal vessel when the level is near the center line, however. This can be a problem if the normal Hquid level is too low or too high and the instniments are not tuned for quick response. 

Licjuid Crystals. Ferroelectric Hquid crystals have been appHed to LCD (Uquid crystal display) because of their quick response (239). Ferroelectric Hquid crystals have chiral components in their molecules, some of which are derived from amino acids (240). Concentrated solutions (10—30%) of a-helix poly(amino acid)s show a lyotropic cholesteric Hquid crystalline phase, and poly(glutamic acid ester) films display a thermotropic phase (241). Their practical appHcations have not been deterrnined.

As seen in Figure 27, proportional action provides an output proportional to the error. If the error is not a step change, but is slowly changing, the proportional action is slow. Rate action, when added, provides quick response to the error.
