Copyright notice

Copyright Notice. In the past, the law contained an absolute requirement that each copy of a pubHshed work bear a proper copyright notice. Failure to comply with the technicalities of the law s notice provisions resulted in the unintentional loss of protection for many works. [Pg.265]

An amendment to the law aboHshed the notice requirement for all works pubHshed on or after March 1, 1989. For such works, no copyright notice is required. Notice, however, is stiH required on all copies of works first pubHshed before that date. In addition, notice is stiU widely used even when it is not required so as to inform the world of the copyright status of the work. Notice consists of the symbol (the letter i in a circle), the word Copyright, or the abbreviation Copr the name of the copyright owner and the year of first pubHcation. [Pg.265]

One misconception about copyright status involves material found on Internet Web sites. Someone does own copyright to the material on a Web site, and it is necessary to obtain permission to reuse it. The lack of a copyright notice does not mean that the work is not protected, nor does it mean that a work is in the public domain or that the author of the work has waived his or her rights. [Pg.81]

Reminder Material published on an Internet site is not necessarily in the public domain, even if the site owner does not have a copyright notice on a Web page. If you download a photograph, illustration, chart, table, or text from a Web site, you must obtain permission from the copyright owner to use it in another publication. Bear in mind that the Web page publisher may not be the copyright owner. [Pg.83]

You must reproduce and include the copyright notice on any copy of the program. [Pg.209]

The list below names the sources and copyright notices of figures taken from or prepared using material from scientific publications and web sites. Additional permissions were obtained via CanCopy (see below). Images not listed were prepared by the author. [Pg.133]
